COVID is spread by airborne droplets when people breathe. Do you do more breathing in a gym or in a shop/restaurant?
Does breathing more mean a less effective mask?
In the gym you should be wearing your mask.
When people sit down in a restaurant are they wearing their mask? The answer here is almost 100% no. I have also seen restaurants less likely to conform to social distancing and have tables close together and facing each other in some cases. Not all, but it definitely is common. Not wearing masks for the entirety of a meal and drinks is exceptionally common. So 2 or 3 hours (maybe more) of sitting down in a high volume area with people drinking, eating, coughing, laughing and sneezing with no masks at all sounds quite a bit worse than being at a fitness facility for a limited time with limited numbers with hopefully mask enforcement.
