A safe has been stolen from the exhibit room of the Alberton police station, Gauteng police said on Friday.

Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said the theft was discovered when the exhibit clerk reported for duty on Friday morning.

It was either stolen on Thursday night, or early on Friday morning.

"It is alleged that there was a break-in, where the main door and the burglar [bars] were damaged," Dlamini said.

"The safe was then dragged out of the office and stolen. It is unknown what type of vehicle was used by the suspect(s) to remove the safe, but it may not fit into a sedan vehicle.

"At this stage, an audit is still being done at the exhibit room to establish the exact contents of the safe," he said.

The numbskulls on duty were dossing as usual I suppose? The bottom line is that nobody can be held accountable for this because nobody saw nutheeeng and if you shrug your shoulders then you're in the clear.

South Africa's Finest!

You would assume that there should be officers on duty 24 hours a day?
What happens if someone goes there to report a crime in the wee hours of the morning?

Love to know what was in the safe. Lots of weapons used in various crimes i guess. Lots of cash and probably a bucket load of drugs.

Where are the police going to get those things. They probably wanted it for scrap metal

Johannesburg - A police constable has been arrested for allegedly stealing an exhibit safe and its contents from an Alberton police station, Gauteng police said on Thursday.

Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the man was arrested late on Wednesday night.

The safe, containing an undisclosed amount of cash, a cellphone, a firearm, and three gold rings, had not been found.

It was stolen last Friday. The security camera at the police station's gate had been tampered with.

The safe was kept in the police exhibit store. It appeared that those who stole it had dragged it along a passage and loaded it into a vehicle.

Five other police officers were suspended for alleged maladministration and failure to comply with standing instructions.

More arrests and suspensions were expected soon.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Mzwandile Petros said procedures were in place for handling cash handed in as exhibits.

According to these rules the money should not have been in the safe.

A team was busy with an audit at the Alberton police station. Preliminary reports indicated that other exhibits, including a vehicle, were also missing from the store.

Colonel Noxolo Kweza said the arrested constable would likely appear in court after the Easter weekend.
