Was definitely discussed at length a few months ago. I'd say if you're not earning the top figure in each of those brackets by the time you're at the top age then your life sucks. As Joker said probably "realistic" but not decent. By the time you're 30 you probably want to have your own house and be considering having a kid which is "doable" with each partner earning 30k but you'd have to have quite a small place or manage your budget quite strictly, not drive a new car etc etc.

R30k net of tax, medical aid and (10%) pension is R50 - R55k gross.
If both partners are pulling that, you can have quite a nice house, newish mid-range cars and put 2 kids through private school.
Assuming a bond of R15k, car payments of R7k, school fees of R10k and sundry monthly expenses of R10k there's still R18k spare for savings and entertainment.

I think you would need to up that bond repayment figure, unless you meant it as the amount per person in the relationship (i.e. a R30k bond instalment)?

EDIT: basic maths says no  so yeah, would definitely up that bond figure to at least R22-25k.

Nope. A R1.8m house with a 20% deposit and a rate of prime - 1 should give you an instalment of around R15k. One can get a pretty nice house for R1.8m

Geez you people must live in mansions. That would put the value of the house at around R2.5 million. I think that a house worth R1 - R1.5 million is more than reasonable if you don't absolutely have to live in a posh suburb, and/or breed like rabbits. There's no need to live beyond one's means...

This. There's no need to live in a posh suburb if you don't have to. And that means the figures being thrown about here don't necessarily apply to everyone...

The R1.8m 4 bed home I'm referring to is in a posh suburb.. not the larney beachside suburb though :)... at R1.8m the house does need modernisation though...

Depends too much on the industry to lay hard and fast rules.

A sideways move into a different industry can double your net salary overnight.

I started working far too late; when I was just about 26. I also negotiated from a very weak position when I did salary negotiations. I think it's time to put my CV out there - if only to test the waters, because I do feel I am underpaid.

My yearly salary in rands is approximately 2x the age (in human minutes) of my cat.
