Step 1: Buy TV
Step 2: Wait 3-4 years for content to be common.
Step 3: Kick yourself because superior models are now R10-20 000.
Step 4: Hear that 8K will be here in 2 years
Step 5: Rinse and repeat.

I read somewhere that NHK (Japanese version of SABC or BBC) will actually be skipping 4K and upgrading their equipment to 8K. I also think that we are reaching a point where the ppi is so high that it would be impossible to differentiate between pixels at normal viewing length. It is currently so for me with the 85/84 inch UHD from Samsung and LG. (Samsung at Dion Wired Greenstone, LG at LG Concept Store Monte Casino). So a smaller 55/65 inch means that the pixel density is even higher. The only place where a higher pixel density is needed is VR (http://www.arstechnica.com/gaming/2...esolution-per-eye-isnt-enough-for-perfect-vr/)

Then what the boys at MIT are doing (http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2013/cheap-color-holographic-video-0619.html) and Japanese (http://www.tgdaily.com/general-scie...anese-scientists-showcase-touchable-holograms), I doubt we will have tech after 8k, until those become mainstream.

So, when will 4K UHD become useful/practical?

Practical? A while.. Useful? Hey, if you're gonna drop that kind of dough on a TV, might as well get some GPUs and do some 4K gaming - you can find out what the next-next-nextgen consoles will look like in 10 years :)

Damn, I'd love to play Just Cause 2 a 4k on a 65" TV!

It all looks the same to me from 3 meters away.

I somehow doubt you want to be closer than that to a 65" screen if you value your eyesight.
