Samsung claimed its Galaxy S7 was not a "telephone for cellular networks"

Samsung has failed to convince the North Gauteng High Court that its Galaxy S7 smartphone is not a “telephone for cellular networks”.

Samsung brought the case against the commissioner for the South Africa Revenue Service (SARS) to withdraw some import tariffs for its smartphones.

The mobile manufacturer was charged for importing “telephones for cellular networks” which it argued did not apply to its Galaxy S7 devices.

WTF "telephone for cellular networks" even mean?

how old is this case? The S7 was released 5 years ago? In smartphone terms that's a dinosaur.

What year was this written in, or have we gone back in time???
Samsung is on the S21 now.

Why the hell are there import tariffs for smartphones? Is that to protect our gigantic cellphone industry?
There are import tariffs on most electronics, not sure why. But the funniest is on monitors cause you could possibly use them to watch TV. I mean you could somehow.

They meant it was to replace a telephone. Connect up your Telkom copper line to this and use at home.
Are these guys dealing with idiots that won't believe the S7 was a cell phone or what?

The irony is SA is actually very capable of manufacturing electronics. Our biggest problem has been the workforce and financial support.

The issue is these nonsensical namings. Just use the normal term cellular phone and there's no confusion.

Import tariffs exist purely has a means of government-endorsed extortion. The answer is simply "because they can".

They did not claim "it was not a telephone". They tried to claim that it's primary use was not as a phone but as a computer which puts it under a different code that doesn't have a 9% tax on it.
