Samsung Galaxy Note 2 owners get free offline navigation in SA

R400 odd if you have any other device.
Drive and Walk is still free though, just need bandwith to download the maps and nav features once.

Navigon is a pain in the bum with updates - all user data gets wiped.

If I look at the user reviews S3 owners aren't missing out on much.

Waze ftw!

I'm using standard Google maps, for which I can download certain areas. Does this mean I'm effectively getting offline navigation?

I've not bothered to turn my data off when using this, I just downloaded the map of greater Cape Town via WiFi so I don't need to use 3G while on the road.

If not, how is this Navigon thing different?

I've uninstalled Waze- it was OK, but I didn't use it much.

Does it also provide voice guided nav and allow you to download maps?

I think it's offline navigation but you have to search online. Once you find your destination, you can switch off "mobile data" and it'll navigate. Haven't tried it yet but I think that's how it should work.

Ahh, makes sense. Hardly much of an advantage unless you're really in the sticks with f-all coverage..

If not mistaken, Nokia Lumia phones (using Nokia Drive GPS) has had Offline Navigation since the start - I can also do a Search Off-line. Only time I need to connect is when they update the maps (for free). Is this any different ?

I remember having Garmin on my Samsung Omnia a few years back and (besides the camera) it was the best thing about that phone.

This would be cool if it was available for us Samsung GS3 users as well :D

So any note 2 users willing to do this for me to test:

Download & install Garmin Navigon
Download & Install Appbackup & Restore (Free @Play Store)
Backup Navigon
Browse to the backup folder and upload the apk to dropbox
share the dropbox link ;)

I have a Note 2, but I recently installed Cyanogenmod. When I go to the Play Store, the app is listed at the normal price. I take it this means I do not get it for free?

It is not for free on the Play Store, but if you download it via Samsung Apps it is free.

Nothing is even a close match for Nokia's GPS software yet. If I compare it to the Nokia 6110 Nav and 2710 Nav, the Samsung etc versions fare even worse. IMO
