About time things start leaking...

Samsung-Galaxy-Note5-Schema-06-840x739.jpg

Courtesy of the folks over at nowhereelse.fr, the same site that brought us early leaks of the Galaxy S6 and HTC One M9 among various other devices, we have what are -allegedly- the first pictures of the Galaxy Note 5. Suffice to say, some people aren’t going to be happy: the render above looks oddly reminiscent to those we saw in the days leading up to the launch of the Galaxy S6. Forbes has extrapolated this is indicative of a glass back, thus a unibody design. (In truth, it could theoretically be metal a la the Galaxy A5). Attention must be paid however, to the cut-out for the S-Pen and the headphone jack, both of which looks slightly peculiar. This could be a very early render, it could be based on expectations, or it could be totally false.

In truth, this development isn’t exactly a surprise given Samsung’s clear focus on refining the design and recreating the very idea of what its flagship products are to consumers in 2015. The stiff competition in key markets like China and India, coupled with the fact that Apple has enjoyed fantastic sales with its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus means that the Korean giant’s A-game needs to be brought to the table this year. What’s more however, numerous OEMs around the world have taken to the phablet size and thus what was once a novel idea has gradually become a status-quo. This is all the more true for consumers who don’t actively make use of the S-Pen and who could just as well buy a Nexus 6 or even the rumored metal-clad “Note rival” LG is said to be releasing later this year.

Also saw it this morning. With an upgrade coming up in August I was hoping for a Note 5 with
a) Replaceable Battery
b) Expandable Storage

Not keen on getting an I-phone running Android (which Samsung is pretty much doing since the S6).

Coming from a Note 3 the Note 5 would be my first choice. Was also considering the LG G4, but now the mention of a metal clad LG will make things even more interesting.

The Galaxy Note 5 (model number SM-N920) will have a flat display akin to the*Galaxy S6*while the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus will come with a*dual-curved display like the Galaxy S6 Edge. The report also reveals that both handsets will have a glass black like Samsung’s two Galaxy S flagships, which also means that the handsets could possibly lack a removable battery or microSD card slot.

The report goes on to state that the differences between the two handsets (other than the aforementioned display differences) are likely to be internal. The Galaxy Note 5 –*which is known internally as Project Noble – is expected to be the first handset to use Samsung’s*Exynos*7422 all-in-one chipset – featuring a 64-bit octa-core CPU, GPU, RAM, storage and LTE modem – and Samsung was reportedly considering a 4K display before settling on a Quad HD panel.

Moving onto the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus – which is known internally as Project Zen – will be powered by a hexa-core*Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor*(like the*LG G4*incidentally) and will have 32GB internal storage, a 16MP rear camera with Optical Image Stabilisation, a 5MP front facing camera and a 3000mAh battery.*The handset is expected to run Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box, may have the ability to shoot images in RAW format and could finally bring a long-awaited fix for the*RAM issues that are plaguing the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.

The*reported specs of the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus and Galaxy Note 5*suggest that we’re now looking at two smartphones that are bigger versions of the Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 respectively. Interestingly, today’s report doesn’t touch on the*S-Pen*– which is a mainstay feature of the*Galaxy Note range*– and although it’s not mentioned, it’s almost certain that Samsung will offer the S-Pen with its latest big-screen phablets.

I don't want a pretty phone, I want a functional phone ie. I want removable SD card storage (that is not crippled by Android !!!!), and I want a removable battery. I don't want a pretty metal back to the phone, it will more than likely be in a case, so the back will not be seen anyway.
I prefer being able to change the battery to aesthetics. Besides, plastic covers (and leather) are transparent to RF, meaning Cellular, bluetooth and wireless signals will always work better with a non metallic back. Perhaps if they want to make it look classy they can rather use genuine leather.
Oh, and Samsung needs to forget about the race for the thinest device. What good is having a paper thin phone if it bends in your pocket - rather keep it thicker and use the extra space for a bigger battery.

Hmm - Starts hoping for the LG G-Pro 3 to come to our shores...

WSJ: Samsung to launch Galaxy Note 5 in mid-August, in order to avoid iPhone overlap

According to a person familiar with the matter consulted by WSJ, Samsung is going to launch the Note 5 around mid-August, in order to give the phablet “some breathing room” ahead of what’s expected to be heated competition with the new generation of the iPhone.

The launch event could take place in a major US city, according to the source, and not the usual venue, Berlin’s IFA trade show, where the first four generations of the Galaxy Note were introduced. Exactly which city will host the event is yet to be decided.

If this new phone doesn't have an external SD card slot or removable battery, characteristic of a Note series, then it no longer distinguishes itself from the Samsung Galaxy S6....it will be too similar and restricted (Apple ?). I will then be looking elsewhere for my next smartphone - the new Huawei P8 with dual SIM, removable battery and SD card looks good.....or the new LG....

The yet to be announced LG G-Pro 3 looks like a good option if they can build on the G4's specs. If they come in with a Snapdragon 820, 3 or 4GB ram, 5.5" to 6" display at QHD and 3500+mAh battery and include expandable storage (must) and removable battery (nice to have), they'll hurt Note 5 sales big time.

The rumors around the new Nexus device also look promising, if only we were able to get our hands on it on contract.

Looking at the rumored specs it would seem like my next phone would not be a Samsung either. I don't mind the non-removable battery, but external storage is a must for me. I don't like the idea of being limited to the amount of storage that's available to me.

Seems like I will be switching back to HTC, nothing else on the current market that catches my fancy.

Same here - I've never had to replace a battery on any smartphone and get through most days with an almost two year old Note 3 battery, but I've always had an external SD full of media. 32 / 64 GB internal will not be enough and 128GB versions will be expensive.
