There is the Samsung S5 Mini for if your S2 dies or you want something just a bit better:

http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=6252&idPhone2=3621

Positives:
1,5GB RAM vs 1GB
Higher resolution screen
Close in screen size (4.5 vs 4.3), so not too big
Natively has Kitkat version OS
Quad core
Longer battery life hopefully due to ~25% more battery capacity

Negatives:
No radio

Pretty much a S2 that's slightly better.

not the same, my wife has a s4 mini... and it just doesn't quite give me the same feel i got from the S2.

Oh, I agree with the S4 mini assessment, its got a smidgen higher resolution and RAM than a S2 and that's it. S5 is more slightly decent is all I'm saying. If my S2 dies or is lost, its what I'd get.

Battery life on the S4 and S4 mini are appalling.

I still reckon the Snapdragon 600 SOC and Exynos 5 Octa chipsets are not powerful enough to drive a 1080p display properly.

Glad this thread popped up.

I sold my iphone 4 a few months ago and am now looking for an android phone on Amazon. I started looking at the Samsung Galaxy range and liked the S2 but then I saw listing for the S3 mini so added a few to my wish list. I have been tossing and turning because I am not sure if I now want the S3 mini.

This morning I woke up and started looking at the Blu range of phones and these are not to bad themselves but they have their pros and cons just like all the other phones in the market. Someone mentioned the 512mb ram which the Samsung S2 has and that seems to be the norm in the Blu cellphone range but I did come across a 1GB Ram on one of their phones.

Is the S2 a better choice then the S3 mini?

Does 512mb ram really stuff your phone up when it comes to bigger usage apps like Facebook, twitter and Whatsapp and other big apps?

You must have had a bad battery or something - in my experience the S4 has pretty good battery life. Typically give me 5 hours screen on time over a 30 hour period. If used heavily (less stand by time), I see 6 hours screen on time.

Also, please elaborate as to why those chipsets are not strong enough to drive 1080p.

Strange thing happened with my S2. I charged the phone with my galaxy note 10.1 2014 edition charger and the battery lasted a full 3 hour on screen time. When charging with my original S2 charger it just makes 2 hours on screen time. Could this be because of the slower charge cycle from the notes charger? Phone took almost 1.5 times longer to charge fully.

Really getting the m*#@ in with Kies now. I just got the Samsung Galaxy s2 and there is an update but Kies will not work on my laptop. When I bought my first Galaxy tab, Kies worked fine then after a few months it would not load. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it but nada. I just downloaded it again off the Samsung site and yet again it will not load.

Why don't you just perform an OTA update?

Kies is horrible software and will never be installed on my Windows 8.1 notebook!

What are you struggling with? Getting Kies installed or getting the phone to read within Kies?

getting Kies installed on pc. everything downloads as per normal but when I want to open Kies it crashes and asks if I want to send the crash report to uncle Bill and Microsoft.

How do you do the OTA update? If I go to my phone it says it is updated (gingerbread) and i must check back in like 10 hours, but I know that is old and all other sites say the jellybean update is available.

OTA should work fine, mine updated like that. Try disabling your anti virus before installing Kies.
