PIT didn't help.

Luckily figured it out, I cleared everything in the power+home+volume up menu that seemed relevant.

After reboot I have a 4GB app space. Enough for my needs, and much better than 2.

Using the CyanogenMod nightly 12.1S and its very stable. Thats Android Lollipop 5.1.1

Just a quick tip always use a battery calibration app after you install a new rom to get the most out of your battery. People always complain about quicker battery drain but this seems to be sorted out after calibration.

Which calibration app do you use. My phone also upgrade to 5.1.1 over the weekend. Then none of the Google apps worked. Strangely the app for 5.1 that was posted here did not want to install. Reinstalled the 4.4 apps and now its working.

I use BatteryCalibration from the play store. Free app.

Thanks. I installed that one. Seemed to take longer to charge to full after installing it, but it is calibrated now. Will see how it goes, although I think there is only so much my old battery can do.

Same here I'm on my 4th battery now and as a power user on smart phones I run them to their end of life battery cycle pretty quick.

As for the roms now I'm gatvol of Lollipop roms and all their issues. Tried just about everything from XDA Always a bug that ends of freezing the O.S. Going back to CyanogenMod 11 snapshopt as I found that to be the most stable and fastest glitch free rom. The S2 handset is old & now no use flogging it to death with new stuff. Last stable versions of slimrom, cyanogen, resurrection remix are also good but the M8/9 snapshot version is the fastest in my opinion.

Yeah, CM12 is definitely slower on the S2 than 11. I'm going to keep it for now, but will also go back to 11 if I have too many problems. Only problem so far was getting all the Google apps working. Any issues going to back to 11 from 12 to look out for?

I finally went back to CM11. I could live with the slowness of CM12, but the phone just froze too often. When browsing for too long, or even when I start typing in Tapatalk. I think the S2 hardware is just not up to it, or maybe CM12 will get better with a later release.

Agree fully with you even dumped CM 11 to SlimKat stable and very happy. Don't think things will get any better than that for the S2 with CM12 but lets hope.

CM12.1.
Awesomeness. On standby with Wifi off the phone go for days (lasted max one day before). I updated the 16th Nightly after 2 months of no updating - Android 5.1.1 now.

So far, so good. But this is only a forum, internet browser, Youtube and a few games phone.

Wow, but CM12.1 is pretty! Too early to tell whether it's stable, but 5.1.1 and Material is gorgeous!

So far it's pretty good. I have had a reboot or two, but I've always had that with Android, regardless of the phone.

Question: what are you guys doing for new batteries? This phone is over three years old now, I reckon it would benefit from a new one.

You can still get original betteries from Samsung service centres or else get the fake ones from the flea markets seem to work well enough. Don't forget to calibrate the battery after installing a new rom.

Okay, so I ditched CM12.1. Runkeeper was spazzing out, and that's one of the very few apps that I really must have. So now I'm on the last SlimKat snapshot. I like the simple interface, but I'm a XFCE user, so I'm probably not a representative user. So far no Runkeeper crashes, although I had to jump through some hoops to get the GPS locking properly.

So now it's just battery life. I have to charge at work and the again at home. I need to charge once a day only. So I guess I'll try a new genuine battery.
