With the Unpacked event T minus 7 days away, I thought I would start the "official" Samsung Galaxy S24 thread.

Here is the link to the event: https://www.samsung.com/uk/unpacked/

So the question is... what do you want to see in the new devices? Do you plan to buy one or are you waiting till the S25 range?

My fiancée is tired of her iPhone 13 Pro Max and wants to go back to Android. She wants the S24 Plus so I am going to buy it for her cash so she doesn't need her contract, especially since she will be moving to the UK.

I expect more of the same and more expensive. These prices are getting ridiculous. Still holding on to my 2022 phone.
I also don't expect to see any feature that makes me want to upgrade from my S22 Ultra since its still an epic phone and with the new Android 14 update the battery life has gotten even better.

They will be touting a greater use of AI in the new series, with features around Live Call Translate and then impacts on photography.

Perhaps initially a limited appeal to certain users, but much like Microsoft CoPilot , it will start redefining the way we engage and use our smart phones.

Apple is stuck with SIRI, so Android really has to start driving forward with Voice Assisted journeys using AI, and Samsung provides them a larger market to test product than their Pixel devices.

I think I'm going to move on from my 4 year old Note 10 Lite but will see what the contract pricing is.

The S24+ is tempting since it seems very similar to the Ultra, but vs the Ultra (based on rumours so far) it lacks :

- Wifi 7, which is nice on paper but in SA it isn't going to be relevant that soon since fibre is topping out at 1000Mbps and Wifi 6E tops out at 1800Mbps.
- 200Mp camera, 4K/120 recording and the ability to switch between cameras at 4K/60 - makes a decent difference.
- Titanium frame, extra 100mAh and S-pen. Cool to have but wouldn't cry about not having it.

The main factor is the CPU I think. The Ultra is apparently getting Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 everywhere, while the S24+ is getting it in certain markets only - hopefully ours.

... get to spend too much cash on a silly wedding.
Her parents are paying for it, so the budget doesn't change... its just coming from someone else. I was going to spend R200 -250k on it, so now I will rather look to spend that money on the honeymoon.

Will be trade in deals, no doubt, so will take the sting out of the contract pricing somewhat

Great if your phone is fairly new, sadly this Note 10 Lite of mine has some burn in on the OLED display where the status bar is so the trade in is like R500.

Would rather just hand it down to my dad, his P20 Lite is aging and the burn-in is only visible when zooming in on a pure white image so not a big deal for his daily use.

Don't be so quick to write it off. Samsung has had guaranteed R10K trade in for the last couple of years. All the device had to be able to do was turn on, the condition of the screen was irrelevant.

If its a qualifying device, and a Samsung, the phone just needs to turn on. They not fussed on the screen condition. Can be anywhere from R10K - R15k saving on the contract fees, so will be worthwhile checking it out

Huh, that's interesting. Didn't know that.

I wonder how it works with a contract, does one get one on a Vodacom contract and then trade in the old device at Samsung afterwards and they tell you how much the installment would be reduced by?

If Vodacom contract two options:

1. Trade in old device at Samsung Store, and buy new phone cash, they discount the cash retail price of the trade in
2. Trade in at Cellucity / Vodacom store they then discount your monthly tariffs by the trade in value, eg: R10000 off 24 month contracts, monthly sub R400 less (for new contract or upgrade).
