Hi,

I got a Samsung Galaxy S3 this week and I'm having a bit of trouble.

Under Settings -> Battery where you can view how much of your phone uses what:
My Screen is on 70%. I have tried everything to get that percentage lower, took off all widgets, changed the brightness settings to auto, using static backgrounds, and so on.

Screen capture of the part I mean:

Any advice on how to lower percentage would be great!

Can't open the pic

Consider rooting and installing a custom kernel. Make backgrounds darkish.

Well there's your problem. Auto brightness on this thing is insanely bright for some reason. It shines with the fury of a thousand suns in my experience. Turn it to manual and use a more realistic setting. But leave "auto adjust screen power" on. The screen will pretty much always be your biggest battery consumer on these modern phones, purely because they're so big.

On second thought, there might be something wrong, mine's showing as 2h44m on battery and it's still at 97% charge... Are you leaving the screen on all the time, constantly using the phone? Because then it will drain in about 7-9 hours I believe. Again similar to most phones I've used over the years, constantly playing around with it does drain the battery a lot faster.

Can see the pic now - Do you use your phone a lot? It looks like you do. Post a screenshot of battery usage with and a screenshot of screen on time

@Avari, it seems you're still in the novelty phase of having a new phone... (PS. The S3 is a great phone). You'll mostly find as you get use to the phones features, that your desire to play with it will decrease to the point where you just use it when you need to... Btw I've had mine for a month now, and my screen consumption is 18% running stock standard without tweaks.

The screen is clearly on 50% or more (the blue stuff under the graph). The screen is biggest sucker, so if your analysing usage over an hour with 30+ minutes of screen screen will always be highest.

I see your on edge btw, did you do this to save battery. I used to, till I figured out my Galaxy note lasts an extra DAY on 3g compared to edge.

I recommend something like Juice Defender for your battery too. It will turn off data things when the screen is off, then turn them back on every 15 minutes (configurable) to up-date stuff. So it save a bit of data usage and saves battery.

Here's my battery usage on the note:

What network are you on? I see conflicting reports on this. I leave mine on Edge with all sync services off. Basically just to receive whatsapp msgs and I get about .5 day more out of my battery

It's completely area dependant, in JHB Randburg on my Sony Ericsson piece of crap tiny battery phone, edge gave me an extra day. Here in CT/Durbanville Edge is evil.

Come to think of it I replaced my phone shortly after moving due to bad battery... Huh, thanks for pointing that out :)

So the answer is test both. If edge is working stick there. I still recommend Juice defender though, it works since it's basic physics.

For sure will check it out. I found if I left sync on with edge, totally killed my battery! I dont know if the following is just placebo effect, but for a while I kept a plain black wallpaper in OS and whatsapp. Then I just got tired of it and went live wallpaper :D
