1080p Super AMOLED display is what geeks' dreams are made of

One of the most important updates that the Samsung Galaxy S4 brings is the new 5" Super AMOLED screen of 1080p resolution. While it does have a PenTile matrix, the 441 ppi pixel density makes sure you won't be able to spot the hated cross-hatch pattern.

The defect wasn't easily spotted on the Galaxy S III either unless you looked from a closer-than-comfortable distance, which is to say it was as good as invisible to the naked eye. The design of the PenTile matrix has been changed too, so now green sub-pixels are twice as many as blue and red sub-pixels and the arrangement is changed. This however matters little to anyone not armed with a microscope.

What you should take away from all this is that the final weak point of the Super AMOLED screens has been taken care of and the Galaxy S4 offers image quality like no other smartphone on the market. Its impressive contrast and almost perfect viewing angles make everything on the screen pop-up regardless of your view point.

The color saturation is beyond the reach of any LCD out there, which make even the dullest image appear remarkably vibrant. Still, if you are not a fan of the oversaturated look of the AMOLEDs Samsung gives you the option to tune down the saturation to more natural levels and enjoy the best of both worlds.

The brightness levels of the Samsung Galaxy S4 is slightly higher than the rest of the company's AMOLED displays, which is to say not very high. However, due to the low reflectivity this doesn't affect outdoor performance.

Wow, surprising to see the Nexus 4 coming last\middle of the pack on some of those benches...

How fast does technology move?!

Only question is....black or white?

Personally I've always thought that black compliments the amoled display the best - in darkness using an app with a dark background the phone seems to disappear. Quite cool with the Kindle app set to black, for example (but not great for your eyes for prolonged periods of time).

Agree with you, black compliments SAmoled best.

Wonder if Multichoice will offer Drifta HD in the not so distant future?

The fact that cm won't support the device is a big problem. CM allows a 2 year device to become a very capable 6 year device.

There are tons of other ROMs out there... A lot of them better than cwm.

I don't know why everyone is whining about the screen so much... check out this article I found

"There are few experts who command the same level of respect as DisplayMate President of Display Analysis Raymond Soneira. That’s why when he says the Samsung Galaxy S4’s display is impressive, it holds a lot of water among tech fanatics, journalists and even everyday consumers.

According to Soneira’s analysis of the Galaxy S4’s 5-inch, 1080p display, Samsung makes use of technology known as CEI Chromaticity Diagram and grayscale for the flagship device’s adaptive screen setup. In layman’s terms, that means that the Galaxy S4’s display is a huge improvement over previous AMOLED-based displays, where colors would tend to be oversaturated.

Instead of whites coming with a faint trace of blue, the whites look whiter, and so on; colors appear more natural when on the Galaxy S4 compared to other Samsung devices with AMOLED display technology.

CNET, which reported on Soneira’s assessment of the Galaxy S4’s display, agreed wholeheartedly with it, adding in its report that it relies on DisplayMate’s software programs for lab tests.

Aside from that 5-inch, 1080p display that apparently offers much more than meets the eye, the Galaxy S4 will also feature 2 GB RAM, 4G LTE, a 13-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front camera, a 2,600 mAh battery and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Depending on market, the Galaxy S4’s processor options are an eight-core Exynos 5410 Octa for international buyers, and a quad-core Snapdragon 600 for those in the United States.

The Galaxy S4 also sports several interesting new features such as Smart Scroll and Air View, a feature that originated first on the S Pen-enabled Galaxy Note 2."

I really do find the HTC One attractive, but I think I'll have to go for the S4 due to the battery, storage, and I'm not convinced with the HTC camera just yet

It is just the iFans looking for something to complain about. Just ignore them or troll them a bit, makes the day go by a bit faster.

Wow, if Soneira is impressed by the screen, then I am doubly impressed. Well done Samsung.

EDIT: I am yet to see a direct quote from the man though...

I don't think so, do you commonly use your phones for 6 years? Samsung have a good track record of updating older phones for a full two years (though they take their time issuing updates). Even the GSII is still being updated to 4.2.1. Also, no doubt, several months from now they will support it or someone will compile CM for the GS4. Though personally I'll stick with an official firmware for as long as they offer it.

So after reading this article now I think I'm sold on the s4

http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s4-review-910p8.php

I think it may be a bit biased, since they had just about nothing negative to say at all about the phone. But I'm quite excited about the Galaxy camera interface they've brought in, it looks fantastic from what I've seen on the galaxy camera.

Just need to root it as soon as I can, and freeze some of the crapware, but I must admit some of the features do look quite useful. This handset is growing on me, and despite everyone complaining that it's more of a 3s it's a big upgrade for those moving from the s2. I just hope it comes out with little to no bugs
