I don't think it matters, but I doubt there will be much of a performance difference between the chips. Possibly battery life.

If you live in a major city then LTE should be a consideration.

:erm:

Dude, where have you been? LTE is out on ALL networks. Vodacom already has prepaid LTE packages. Yes, coverage is limited to metropolitan areas, but it's most certainly available.

Guilty ... I haven't been following the progress of LTE in this country. I didn't realise all the networks had implemented trials already. That being said, having had a look at the coverage maps, it's still in its infancy. But I'm sure then that they will be bringing the LTE enabled phones in, I'd imagine in a year or two the LTE network should be a lot more extensive.

IF the S4 launched in SA today with both SoC variants - I would be hard-pressed to choose between the two.

I am not really interested in LTE at this stage, as I rely more on uncapped WiFi, both at home and at work. We have crappy VC signal at work, which forced VC to install a repeater, which is 2G only. Due to this, my S2 is set to 2G only for 99% of the time. HSDPA is fast enough for me currently when I need to use mobile data.

I was always hoping that we would get the BIGlittle octa-core Exynos 5, sans LTE as the sacrifice. Real-world performance is still unknown, and it still remains to be seen whether it will benefit or worsen battery life.

With the rumors CM and others would most likely support the Snapdragon, I think I would most likely choose S4 with the 1.9GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor. With clock speeds that high, it is still going to be a monster of a CPU, with better ROM support going forward and LTE. The only downside is that it may be more power hungry than the Exynos 5.

Given the option, which would you choose? And why?

The HTC One :D

Oh yes, the why- it is simply stunning...

Seriously? Have you tried to root and load another version of Android on a HTC? That is one of the reasons I will never get an HTC, that and the no SD card and no removable battery.

Yup, remember that.

Had the Desire HD & Wildfire S and think you had to go to HTC's Web site to unlock your bootloader. :(

I would get the bigLITTLE Octa, estimates seem to show that this will be better on power consumption (still waiting for real world verification) and am not likely to be in need to LTE as well. SO if i were to get a Samsung device i would get that. Still deciding between that and a possible Nexus 5...

To be honest, I don't see why LTE is so amazing right now. I currently use a CellC 7Mb modem and speeds are more than adequate for me (I get between 1.5Mb and 5Mb speeds). I believe that HSDPA\HSUPA can go up to 42Mb and LTE currently is hitting around this speed but I'll only be amazed when we get to the 100\150Mb speeds!

Yeah took me an entire Sunday to root and load a custom rom on a friend's Desire S :(

yeah www.htcdev.com and the bloody website kept on timing out.

May I present to you: The HTC HD2

Let's give HTC a chance, they seemed to have realised their folly. Utilising Qualcomm architecture is a very good start in developing openness with the community...

Fairly straightforward on the One X

Samsungs treatment of developers on a open source platform is terrible and they have very very little supporters in terms of devs that will work with the s4, sad for such a great device

When did Samsung change their tune with dev's though? I seem to remember when the S2 was launched that they donated a couple phones to the CM team. When did the relationship sour?

Well read up how cynogen team are not even buying galaxy s4 to start with and how since the s3 Sammy has promised source code and promised and it was released but they removed so much leaving and broken code that was handed over!

Suppose the devs are sick of it and again the s4 snapdragon phones might get lucky with there cpu for kernels but I doubt the devs are even going to look at the exynos ones for custom kernels do to there lack of source code that will probably never be given out by Samsung.

I'm using the original Samsung Jellybean ROM - and it's fantastic.

Never felt the need to load a custom ROM.

You might want to get yourself a Nexus if you want plain vanilla Android.
