Yes it's probably the gpsd bug, when signal is really bad the phone tries to stabilise signal and the gpsd starts to run. Did the back near the camera get really hot? If so bam I had it due to Vodacom being horrible.

cant recall if it got hot, but could be the reason.
Funnily enough although the phone is an MTN (my old one) she is on Vodacom

I had the gpsd drain today. I'd almost forgotten about the bug. Picked up what was happening when I could feel how warm the phone was in my pocket, and with the temperature today, that took a while.

Yup it sucks when it happens :-(. Find if I set my phone to GSM only it doesn't happen, yeah I only get edge speeds when on Mobile but I am hardly ever on it.

Can anyone advise me on choosing the latest SA firmware for i9500? I see two of them on sammobile which appear the same and I don't know which one (if any) would be free from carrier junk?

Nope, I'm out of the country and have CM11 loaded at the moment. I just thought I'd ask before I flip a coin :)

I had CM loaded a while ago. Super fast, but the call quality problem is just to much of a hassle. Are you changing back to stock for the same reason?

Yes, it was even worse after the last nightly I did last week.

I grabbed xfa btw and will flash tonight. I believe that is the non branded version.

Hey Guys

So recently my S4 got stolen :( was mostly happy with the phone, aside from a few things. Anyway time to get a new phone, and I can't seem to make my mind.

Currently the Z3 looks to be topping my wishlist, not too ecstatic about the battery life on the G3, nexus 5 camera too ****ty, same goes for the HTC One, and the galaxy s5 is appealing but I'm a bit tired of samsung.

Anyway care to share their opinions? I don't want anything bigger than the z3, it's already slightly larger than I'd like.

Cheers

If the Z3 is a bit big, ill punt the best phone out at the mo in my opinion. Z3 Compact. Still loving this thing.

The Z3 Compact looks like a fabulous phone, if you want something slightly smaller than your S4.

Personally I just have to suggest the S5 again (I know you're tired of Samsung), because it has the best display ever fitted on a smartphone, superb camera, Touchwiz UI is actually not bad at all, and ADH Premium.

You can sleep safe in the knowledge that when/if you drop your phone, and the display shatters, you're covered.

I am incredibly happy with my gold S5.

Happy hunting!!

*Oh, the Nexus 6 will be with us soon. Might be the one you want. ;)

A friend of my recently received his Nexus 5, so I got to play with the thing for the first time. All I have to say is this: it is seriously fast. The speed of touchwiz is laughable in comparison. I've never seen Android perform quite like that. It will also be the first phone to receive the Android L update.

I have not tested the Nexus 5 camera myself, but as far as I know the camera produces acceptable images - nothing amazingly good or bad.

If I had to upgrade my phone now, I'd either wait for the Nexus 6 or get a Nexus 5.

Tks for the replies guys... Nexus 6 is unfortunately way too big for my liking. I'm pretty much looking at the Z3 or the s5 now, maybe the z3 compact, although I really wish they could have upped the screen res a bit, but it's not bad by any means!

Just not too happy with the how the camera performs out of the box, Sony seems to have set it up pretty poorly... This is just a software issue though, as hardware wise I believe it's one of the best, so hopefully Sony address this with a software update, hopefully Android L will be coming to the Z3 soon!

After over a year of serving me well I am giving my S4 to my Mum, who wants to try it for a month or so while waiting for the iPhone 6 as she now wants a larger display, her BB Q10 and iPhone5S are not cutting it with their tiny displays, hope the S4 converts her to Android and she gets a GS5 instead of the iPhone 6.

I have moved on to a Note 4 as of Wednesday night, and loving it, coming from the compact S4 the size is going to take some getting used to, but so far I'm happy :)

To those going the full 2years with the GS4 I wish you many more happy times with it, still such a brilliant smartphone, I'd still recommend it.

Mine too. It was in SA on 20 August. Sapo tracking shows its out for delivery since the 16th.
Finally received mine. I had to go to the post office and search for it.

The quality of the cover is awesome.

I thought I'd give it a try too, but mine is still lying at the mail hub in Joburg. It came out of Customs on 21 August.

I'm glad you like it, it really improves the overall feel of the phone in the hand.

Hi guys,
Might be a stupid question, but how do i root this device?
I have installed "TowelRoot", and have clicked make it rain, it says device not supported. (yes i have tried all 3 different codes)
Then i installed "Kingo Root", it installs software/drivers for the phone, then it connects, it says connected with Device ID GT-I9500, and in red "UNSUPPORTED Device"
And a Network Error pops up 20 seconds later.
If i click ROOT, it goes to "Fetching Scitps", then bombs out.

Am i doing something wrong?, it there another way of doing this?

I want to remove all this crappy Samsung Bloatware and see if the device preforms any better.

Edit, don't know if this will help
Android 4.4.2 installed.
