Need instructions

This is what you'll need to root your phone (i9500). There are many guides on the net if my instructions aren't clear.

There are guides over at XDA too if you need them: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2292615

Make sure your battery has at least 50% power. Make sure your PC has the Samsung USB drivers installed.

Installing a Custom ROM wipes your phone, so make sure you important stuff backed up. It does not wipe your SD card, or pictures / video's etc. But to be safe, back these up too.

Rooting:

- Download and extract the CF Auto Root to a folder on your desktop.
- You should have a CF Auto Root (.md5) file and an Ondin3-v3.0.7.exe file among others.
- Run the Odin3 application.
- Switch off your phone and put it into Download mode by pressing Vol down + Home + Power simultaneously.
- Connect your phone to your PC via a USB cable. (Odin should show a blue or yellow box on the left when it detects a connection).
- Click the PDA button, and select the CF-Auto-Root (.md5) file you extracted to your desktop earlier.
- Make sure the Repartition option is NOT checked.
- Click Start.
- It will now root your phone. Your phone will then reboot and odin will show PASS.
- That's it, phone rooted!

Flashing a custom recovery:

- You'll need a recovery to flash custom ROMs. I use CWM 6.0.4.6 .
- Download the recovery and put it in same folder as odin.
- Switch your phone off and go into Download Mode again (Vol down + Home + Power) and connect your USB cable and make sure Odin is running.
- Odin should show a blue or yellow box in the left if the phone is connected successfully.
- Select the PDA option in the Odin app (again, make sure repartition is NOT selected) and browse to the CWM 6.0.4.6.tar recovery you downloaded to the Odin folder on your desktop.
- Click start to begin the flashing process.
- Once the recovery has been flashed, your phone will restart.
- If you see PASS that means success. You now have a Recovery installed to flash custom ROMs.

Flashing a custom ROM:

- Download Omega v26 (or any other ROM you wish to flash).
- Copy the downloaded ZIP file to your external SD card (do not unzip this file!).
- Boot into recovery mode by holding Vol up + power simultaneously.
- Now select "Wipe data/factory reset" in the recovery menu.
- Then wipe cache partition.
- Then under Advanced, wipe dalvik cache.
- Now go back and select the "install zip" option in the recovery menu.
- Select "choose zip from /storage/sdcard1."
- Select the Omega ROM which you copied onto the exSD card and follow the on screen instructions.
- Once Omega is installed, and you reboot your phone out of recovery mode, it may ask you if you want to "fix root". Select NO! This will mess up your root.
- That's it! You now have a rooted phone with Omega installed. :)

I just got the S4 Active yesterday...I didn't even know that model existed. Either way it's a decent upgrade from my Afrihost Zest. :p

Thanks so much for this, just rooted. Onto flashing a custom recovery now...
Is it possible to flash a custom ROM without an SD card?
You can copy the ROM to your internal phone memory and install from there, but it's not recommended. Some ROMs wipe the internal memory to prep for installation. You don't want to be doing this while you installing from the same partition.

Just grab yourself any micro SD card and be done with it. :D

My word that was so nerve wracking, I think I've definitely grown a few grey hairs from doing this but all seems to be fine now, thanks for your guide genetic!

Just one thing, where it says:
- Boot into recovery mode by holding Vol up + power simultaneously.

I had to Vol Up + Home Key + Power...

It froze during going through the final setup and it just kept saying "Please wait...", for like half an hour I just stared at my phone wondering what I f##ked up... then I touched the screen and it went to the next menu... BIG sigh of relief :D

Now to restore all my sms's/whatsapps and my sanity...

I swapped my Galaxy Note 10.1 today for a Galaxy S4. The Tablet was just lying in the drawer because it's not really needed.

I know it's not a S5 and doesn't come close to my Note3, but the S4 surely is a nice phone.

What firmware are you guys using?

I will have a look at that. I'm looking for something close to the original Android because my wife will probably use it.

My S4 is Vodacom branded  running 4.2.2. So I downloaded 4.4.2 XFA from Sammobile and flashed it.

But when I restart my S4 it still shows the Vodacom bootscreen with all the Vodacom Bloatware but it does say 4.4.2.

WTF??

You can flash stock boot animation if you download it from the Omega files app.
