Weird that you having battery issues. I got home yesterday after a full day at the office and was sitting at 60% battery. I was even considering not charging my phone last night... But I did anyway :)

Really need to get a screen protector and a case asap

I started using a screen protector and case when i first got my S2, but then realised that i'm degrading my experience with this awesomely made phone.
Screen protectors generally reduce the quality and changes the feel of the screen and cases make the phone bulky

Phones are meant to be used not kept like babies, at the end of a poorer experienced filled two years (compared with someone who used the phone in its natural form) you would just end up with a pristine condition out of date phone.

You are bang on the button :)

Screen protectors became a big deal with the iPhone because of it's sensitive screen. Then everyone just started using them because they thought they had to - or are paranoid.

S2, S3, S4, Note 1, Note 2 - never a screen protector. Case yes - screen protector no. Never a scratch or mark on any of the screens.

Its a pity about the plasticky finish of the S4. If not for that, I think I would have ordered one already.

Can't really compare the S3 build quality with the S4. Had a good look now and the S4 is a lot better build and feels much better in the hand than the S3 IMHO

If you not happy with the build quality of the S4 you could go Sony or HTC. Good luck with updates and support on both of those :)

Regardless what you get, I bet you will put a case on it? So rather go for plastic which is lighter.

mind making a step by step guide for us newbies (to android) ?
also what apps do you install after rooting and from which sites (links etc)

1. Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2255652 and download. Link in the first post.
2. Extract all the contents. The main files you should have are Odin3.exe and cofface_I9500_cwm_recovery_en_new.tar.
3. Turn off your phone. Then hold Volume Down + Home + Power to boot into download mode. Your phone will prompt you to confirm you want to enter download mode. Press up to confirm.
4. Plug your phone into your PC.
5. Start Odin3.exe. If all is good, the top left block will go yellow to show a connection. Otherwise download Samsung Kies to get the drivers loaded.
6. Click the PDA button and select cofface_I9500_cwm_recovery_en_new.tar which you extracted earlier. Tick and click nothing else.
7. Click Start. Takes a few seconds and your phone will reboot.
8. Once booted, turn off again.
9. Now boot into recovery. Volume Up + Home + Power.
10. You will see a menu option "Root Phone". Use your volume buttons to get to it and power to execute it.
11. Reboot phone. Profit.

EDIT: Titanium Backup is critical if you are going to enter the ROM flashing arena. Unless you like the pain of setting everything up over and over. It is also handy to keep backups of all your data in the cloud so setting up a new phone is painless.
Other than that, do a Google for apps that require root. There are quite a few. Droidwall another handy one.

What are the alternatives if you dont want to install KIES for the drivers? Is there one?

Just tried some Samsung USB drivers now and those didnt work. Gonna just install KIES, then uninstall and hopefully it leaves the drivers behind... ??

Thanks for that. What apps/processes are you guys gonna stop once you done root?

Not stopping anything yet. Batter life and performance is great so no need.
If I was still on my S2, well - different story :)

Got drivers installed. Just installed JIES. Can anyone get the above working? Did the rest no issues at all

I press those buttons (while phone is off) and it just boots normally

Titanium Backup requires USB Debug to be off

To enable Developer Mode so you adjust the default which is "ON"

Settings > More > About Device and then tap the greyed out "build number" line 7 times. Then go back a screen and you'll see Developer Options as a choice in the "more" menu. (credit to XDA)

I am starting to experience an emotional attachment to my S4. A little bit worried - and my wife is getting jealous.
