Samsung Galaxy S5 FNB price revealed

Has anyone heard any more about FNB offering the Nexus 5?

FNB Previously said they were in discussions with whoever about adding it to their catalogue, but I haven't heard anything since.

Imma get one I think. :D That water/dustproofing is a winner for me.

Even though the price ain't really that great?

Interest free, plus smart device discounts for reward tiers etc, it's not too bad - also freedom from cell contracts...

But you basically just exchange a cell contract (which I'm also rid of since December) for one with FNB?

How do the discounts work again?

spend 2000 or more on your gold cc or 5000 on a plat one , and get R50 off a month. ( must be swipes)

I work for the firstrand group so it's not likely I'm going to want to move my banking away from them ;)

It's not a cellular contract. It's an interest free loan to buy the device.

Yes, but they're not greatly comparable. The alternative is not a cellular contract, but rather just buying the phone outright

Why not?If you have a limit on your cellular contract then effectively you are buying the device with some free minutes and data included in the deal.

In the past it could be argued as not being the same concept but with the new CPA regulations you can cancel your contract at any time and just pay for the balance owing on the phone itself just like you would at FNB,in fact cellular contracts supply you the phone at a cheaper cost since a portion is counted as subscription fees for those minutes according to their cost structure while the bank would charge you the whole monthly charge/subscription as the balance.

I am still not sure I get the attraction of these sorts of offers, besides not being "tied" to a contract with a cellular SP, as you're still going to need to choose one on a pay as you go basis to use the phone.

FNB @ R399pm x 24 months
No minutes
No data
No SMS

MTN @ R489pm on MyChoice100 x 24 months
100 minutes
300MB data
100 SMS
+ a free 16GB MicroSD card

So you are saving R90 per month which you'll need to use to get airtime and data (forget SMS as no one uses it). May I ask what options there are to achieve that?

This. I don't get it either. In fact if you go on the cheapest contracts with Vodacom or MTN it usually costs you even less. Don't see the difference between having a contract with a cellphone network or FNB.

The attraction is that I'm not stuck with a single cellular provider. I can fund my own calls and data, and it will come out more cost effective and more useful than a pre-packaged usage deal.

With respect to the CPA and cancelling, you still have to pay a 'reasonable' termination charge over and above the device cost. Also, the provider determines the device cost and what is still owing on it - and they purposefully don't depreciate the device linearly.
