Alright, so seems I'm stuck on the old dead firmware. How do I go from here? S7 Edge, stuck on 6.0.1 with security update 1 December 2016.

Baseband G935FXX

Any useful links or upgrade links to flash to latest and still get working updates/security updates automatically?

Last thing, seems I will be wiping my phone to factory defaults.
Will I be able to restore the phone from backup Samsung backup?

?

The S6 was crap.
The 7 is great
The s8 IMO isn't great
The s9 will be great
You need to slip all the odd years
Same with s5

wot?

The S6 was crap, why? because no SD card, and schit battery life.... nothing else. Everything else was perfect. The S7 was everything the S6 couldn't be. Bigger screen, great battery, SD card...

The S8? Same as the S7, with an even bigger screen.... comparing the S8 to the S6 makes no sense... at all!

There was nothing wrong with the S5.... it just was just almost no improvement of the S4, besides the finger print reader (which was schit) but that's because it was the first iteration...

Yes, exactly, thats exactly why the S6 was crap, mine is siting in cupboard. It was slow, laggy, the list goes on.
The S7 is brilliant, so happy with it.
S8, I dont know enough, played with someones here, was not that impressed with the layout of everything physically. etc etc
I am not comparing the S8 -S6.
I am saying I would not waste my money or time if I already had the 7 which I do.
I found the S5 to be one of the best phones I had at the time, miles ahead of the S4

then i probably misunderstood this:
Not at all impressed with the S8.
This phone will be IMO like the S6.

you said nothing of the like, but i do agree, if you don't have FOMO like me...

That's not what you said here:

Pushed to more than just US, have a look on Sammobile, quite a few with May 2017 (e.g. UK EVR, Netherlands PHN).

No one to blame but yourself if you're sitting on a crap firmware, it's very easy to fix ;).
Not blaming anybody. . . . .realised it the other day because that's not something I specifically look at everyday.

The Galaxy S5 was a good phone, but nothing stood out with it.

When the S4 arrived t brought a Full HD Display and a plethora of sensors and Features some of which other OEMs are only implementing now and Samsung has strangely removed like the Gesture Sensor and IR Blaster.

The S5 was more like just a gap filler while Samsung worked on their new design language and hardware (aluminium build, UFS Memory, new UI etc...).

The S6 was the 1st gen of the Samsung we know now, and 1st gen is almost always never perfect, and has many flaws.
S7 was the 2nd gen which fixed everything and the S8 is the evolution of the 2nd gen.

You can't go wrong if you get a S7 or S8, in fact, I believe the S7, S7 Edge, S8 and S8+ can coexist and do coexist well as each fill a nice little gap.

I wouldn't leave my S7 Edge for a S8+ but at the same time I wouldn't blame someone who is a tech addict for doing so as the S8+ is incredibly beautiful and is an evolved S7 Edge.

If by "Gesture sensor" you mean the ability to hover a hand over the screen to get it to light up. That's still there (on S8s anyway), tucked away as an accessibility setting now.

I tried to get Wifi calling enabled, but Vodacom (via Twitter) said that they do not offer it. It was in testing phase before.

About an hour ago I heard a little birdie say it's now available, so try and turn it on under the Phone app settings, check for a firmware update and be sure to enable VoLTE.
