If it works with an S5, maybe... When will this become a reality and what model handsets will be compatible?

What can you use this for? Do you watch movies with it?

You can watch movies in a virtual theater.

Along with the price drop, the VR headset is now also compatible with some of Samsung’s mid-range devices, including Samsung’s 2016 A-series smartphones – which are available in SA.
I can't find any other source online to confirm this. Would be cool if the 2016 A5 is compatible, but there will be a resolution drop.

I am trying to figure out how much I would need to pay to get a semi-decent VR experience. (I don't think I will use the phone for anything else). Mostly streaming PC games with TrinusVR+Tridef3D/Vireio to the phone.

A5: +/- R6800 - 960x1080 per eye
S6: +/- R8000 - 1280x1440 per eye
S7: +/- R???? - 1280x1440 per eye

With only about a R1000 difference in price between the A5 and S6 it seems like the S6 is a better deal.
Now I just need to figure out if the S7 with the included GearVR will be close to <= R10000. If not then i would go with the S6.

...Or should I just get an actual Oculus Rift...?

Will it be able to run Cry-

Will it work on PC?
Yes. You can use a few third party apps to play certain games on your PC and stream it to the phone in the VR headset. You will need a relatively powerful PC.
Tridef or Vireio to render the Side-by-Side 3D and TrinusVR to do the streaming. If the game natively can display Side-by-Side 3D then Tridef or Vireio is not required.

Will this work with non Samsung phones?
GearVR is only meant for certain Samsung phones, but there are a few alternative headsets such as Homido that work with multiple different phones.
The phone needs to be close to 5", >= 1080p display and have certain sensors:

or you can make your own Google cardboard for cheap :)

Just to clarify this you still need a phone inside it to use it with a PC.

Whats stopping you from using the Gear VR like a Google Cardboard ie not plugging it in and just using the lenses to view cardboard apps on your phone.

For those with the Gear VR please use other phones like this, without plugging them in and tell us the result.
