Ok so last week my Samsung 5 Series LCD started showing signs of "image retention". TV is only 14 months old. It goes away after watching something else, but still it has never done this before. 12 month warranty is gone and I've read on the internet on various sites that once this starts happening it is the beginning of the end. I've done the white screen...left it over night for 8 hours...didn't help much. I've done the black screen...same thing. LCD would be back to normal...but as soon as the TV has been on for a couple of hours and becomes warmer...the image retention is back again and even worse. When watching my movies with the black bars I can see it as well.

I've sent Samsung an email telling them of my disgust with their product that cost me a bloody arm and leg last year. Very convenient for it to start exactly after the warranty period is over.

Any advice for me? Has this happened to any of your LCD TVs? If this problem can't be rectified I will replace it with a Sony or Philips.

Which Sony and Philips should I look at? I was thinking the Sony
KLV-46V550A perhaps? Not many people sell the Philips...so I'm completely in the dark on that one. Budget is R18 000.

Looking forward to your replies.

Thanks
M

Image retention on LCD? My plasma has a bit of IR every now on then but it goes away in second or two. I thought LCD's was immune to IR...

Apparently they are not :(. Seems like I'm the first guy to experience this.

Yeah .. ditto, I thought LCD was immune to this. Seeing that I have a series 5 LCD I am curious to know what this image retention looks like and of course what was on the screen for long enough for it to "burn' in the screen ? Pics perhaps ?

I'll take some photo's later tonight. It looks like a very subtle outline of the image. For example when my Dark Knight bluray goes from showing the black horizontal bars to full screen, I can see the lines of the horizontal bars. When I watch photos on my TV, I can see the vertical lines of the photos. It really looks ***. I even saw the outline of the bloody Supersport Logo when we watched all the rugby games on Saturday. You can't see it when watching a moving picture, but as soon as you go into a menu with blue or gray background, you can see it immediately. It doesn't go away after a few minutes. It actually takes hours or even days. When we paused a DVD the other day and the screensaver came up, I could see the brighter parts of the actors' faces as well (see link below). :(. **** I hate Samsung. I payed R16 000 for this TV last year June 2008. I am so pissed off right now and I always look after my stuff and use it like I'm supposed to.

This is what happened when I paused a DVD for 5 minutes. http://ars.samsung.com/customer/ctr..._ID=-1&AT_ID=140352&PROD_SUB_ID=0&PROD_ID=154

Sony here I come.

this kinda sux, i have a Samsung Series 3 at the momemt.. it better not give in.. *crosses fingers that it will last 4-5yrs before anything goes wrong*

One strategy would be to learn how to induce any burn-ins or common technical faults at around 11 months of the warranty period. Then get it fixed 4 free and hopefully not experience any further problems for a good 3 or 4 years.

Alexcon, I was also hoping for 4 - 5 years. There goes that. Could be I just have bad luck. I've had 32" HD Samsung for more than 2 years and it never gave me any problems. I have 2 Samsung LCD Monitors I use with my PC....no issues whatsoever. Why the most expensive Samsung product I ever bought had to do this, I have no idea.

Mate of mine's "samflung" now shows a green bar's all over the place, even if nothing is connected up.
My Boss'es sony w series went poof 3 months back....was only 3 weeks old or something.
I know 7 people with Panasonic, none have had any problems but they paid for it!

Happy with my 5year sinotec warranty thank you very much.

Does not South African law stipulate that electronic items like this have to have a 3 year warranty?

Just remember, Sony Bravias use Samsung panels anyway, so if you buy a Sony, Samsung won't be losing you as a customer ;)
