Hi

I am looking for a new camcorder just for recording clips of my baby and stuff. I have a JVC camcorder (6 years old) that uses mini DV tapes but the quality isnt good and its a pain finding empty tapes etc. I want to buy a new reasonably priced camcorder bearing in mind it is just for occasional family use.

Would you recommend this HMX H300 or are there viable alternatives.

Also whats the difference between th HMX H240. (Saw a thread saying for R4699 is a great price for it). I would have though the HMX 300 is better and newer for R1700 less. lol.

Thanks

I'm looking at the Sony CX110 which is full HD and costs R3995 for exactly the same purpose.

I took the plunge and bought the Sony HDR-XR150E today. It's very simple but the big thing for me was the internal 120GB HDD. No need for SD cards anymore which is a relief.

I've owned a Samsung Video8 and MiniDV video camera, and all I can say is that both were below par in terms of image quality. Their colours were always horrid and there was always severe aberration on the corner of the image.

I'm not sure if their more recent models in recent years are any better, but I'd never buy a Samsung camera again. They should stick to TV's and monitors which they do very well.

You can never go wrong with a Canon or Panasonic.

EDIT: Seems like the Samsung HMX-H200 was reviewed at camcorderinfo.com, and it didn't fair too badly at all for what it is. I guess Samsung have pulled up their socks on their cameras in recent years.

I actually took mine back for a refund. Low light performance was terrible. Still looking for something decent.

I finally decided on the Sony DSC-HX100V which I bought from Orms yesterday.

HD video is awesome as is the 16MP camera with 30x optical zoom. I looked around and decided that if I could get a camera that does very good video then that would be my choice and this really is good.

Better than anything Canon and Nikon in it's range at the moment.

got the DSX-HC100V from Makro. R4250. They were on special at R 4499 from R4999. I told them about the Sony offer and they dropped it to R4250.

Seems like a quality piece of kit.
