I have a year old Samsung PS42A410 - 42" plasma
recently been watching old Simpsons episodes in 4:3 and I've noticed there is now a burnt-in line on either side of the 4:3 frame.

when i bought this tv the salesman assured me that plasma screen burn was a thing of the past and that the samsung had 'anti-burn' technology.

anyway obviously one cannot trust salesmen and now I'm stuck with burn lines on the panel. Anyone know if there is any way of fixing this or at least diminishing the effect?

That the thing with plasma's the new one have improved but still have the risk of a burnt in marks even if it is "Anti-burn".

My parents had the same thing on their Sinotec - it went away after about a week of normal watching.

You could try running a fullscreen white image for like 24hrs or alternatively try something like PlasmaSaver DVD or JScreenFix

Googling remove plasma burn in should also give you some ideas.

Does your display support pixel shift and grey/coloured borders?

thanks Ponder, will check those out.
Yes the panel has pixel shift and the side grey feature, both are enabled but didn't stop the burn from happening.

If the TV is on but no picture is visible on the screen (eg when your DSTV decoder is switched off but that input is selected on the TV) - if that's when you see the 'burn in' I wouldn't worry about it. It should go away and it should not affect your picture quality.

Try to watch more 16:9 (widescreen) programming ie set your TV to WideScreen, and tone down the brightness and contrast levels a bit.
Some plasmas have Life Preservation modes which do this automatically
and when engaged the picture still looks very good (when this function is
off the picture is a bit too bright).

Ouch. Apparently most burn in occurs within the first 100hrs of use. Recommended to turn brightness & contrast down as well by some.

i did the whole first 100 hours thing with low contrast etc, thought i was in the clear, this happened after my girlfriend watched several hours of 4:3 simpsons... DOH!

the lines are visible when watching other shows in 16:9 so i reckon it's a bad burn.

Trying some suggestions from forums (tv channel with snow etc) and will see, lesson learnt with plasma though :( great picture up until now but a few hours of 4:3 wrecking the screen is just not cool.

Don't try to fix it. It will go away by itself. Fixing it will just degrade the remaining areas of the screen, and that makes little sense. These things happen but after a while the burn in fades away -its not permanent.

well that is encouraging, will give it a couple of weeks and see what happens.
In the meantime i'll just avoid 4:3 video.
