Morning,

What you can do is still dial up through your analogue dial up as long as you plug your laptop in using a telephone connection anywhere you are and that it supports VISP dial up, you will be able to access the internet anywhere.
In regards to updating your credit card details, you can send this to info@saol.com along with a copy of the new credit card, if you could fax this on 0312085444

Kind Regards

Vanessa

SAOL Sucks continued

SAOL keeps contradicting themselves all the time and they don't seem to care really about loosing a customer either. Lets all leave them see if they react the same

Here follows my email conversation with them

Sorry about the confusion, other than fax or posting there is no other way. When updating all our clients details, this is always done either via email or fax. All clients credit card details are always sent via fax as we find this as the safest way.

Kind Regards

Vanessa

As you can see I don't want to sent it by email, due to its insecurity don't you guys get it. You suggested to me in the first place to sent it by email which I couldn't believe at all that the tought came in your mind. I want this conversation to be forwarded to management
and I am going to publish it on myadsl.

Morning,

I have just had a chat with our Financial Manager, and she says that you can send your credit card details via email to us on condition that you state that should there be any breach that you do not hold SAOL.COM responsible as we are just trying to protect our clients when it comes to sending confidential information of that nature.

Kind Regards

Vanessa

Dear Sir/Madam

Unfortunately you cannot use your adsl credentials for an analogue dial-up.
For account updates please email info@saol.com.

I take it that SAOL doesn't accept EFT as a payment method?

After having my fingers burnt giving bank account details to iBurst [WBS] - and I am still owed R456 that was illegally deducted 12 months ago, I refuse point blank to give any company a debit order authorisation. Luckily my ADSL ISP accepts EFT as a payment method - and they automatically email me proper tax invoices as well :).

I am no fan of SAOL, but I am not sure exactly what you expect them to do here. Email is an insecure method of communication. If you have a modem for dialup, I would bet money on it that it is a fax modem. Simply use this to fax the details!

IMO moklet is questioning why SAOL doesn't allow updated bank details to be entered securely online via SAOL's website - presumably SAOL don't have this implemented...?

I don't suppose you took a scanner with you on holiday, right......?

Even if you did consider it, how will you scan in the needed, signed info?

Taking EFT's sure makes it a lot easier for most people, and businesses. Only about 27% of our clients make use of the debit order system, the rest prefer EFT

An email is sent in clear text and stops by a number of servers along the way. At any point in the process, this email can be read and the details extracted from the email. It is absolutely ludicrous to send a credit card number by email.

A fax is sent directly along a single line. In order for someone to capture your fax, they would need to do some fairly advanced sniffing at the Telkom exchanges. EMail is sent from server to server in plain text until it reaches the destination server. Anyone can view the text. That said, some of the modern fax solutions us email anyway.

I'm also at a bit of a loss as to what you would expect them to do here, although I am no fan of theirs either.

I was with them for a grand total of around 3 months, during which time I was cut off twice, each time after hours and each time could not get reconnected until normal office hours, simply because they were unable to reconcile payments at their end.

I found their apologies to be completely unsatisfactory and left them to join cybersmart, who (up until now at least) I haven't had any problems with.

IMO sending credit card details via email is not an issue. I have been doing it since the beginning of email, and i know many who do it. As long as you do not authorise any transaction, whats the problem ?

Catch21, I would stop doing that if I were you. Not safe at all. It's very easily to sniff mail on port 25 enroute to it's destination, being plain text and all. With you CC details they could literally clean out your account (with online ordering you don't have to be in this country to do it) . This is were those SSL digital cert folks are making their money (albeit it web browser traffic), encrypting this info on transit. Visa and Mastercards also have specific certification programs in the US for online merchants where you have to follow their strict program for storing/transmitting CC info.

I'm with killadoob on this one, I'm with SAOL and must say that I have never had any problems. Everytime i've had an enquiry, i've received prompt response addressing the issue. When trying to change my banking details, they commited the changes within a day. Only exception, is trying to get details from them regarding new regulations.
