SAPS arrest Eskom employee for alleged Tutuka hydraulic oil theft

Surely that is a misprint - only R10,000 for theft and bribery. That is not even a slap on the wrist. If this is where fines are at today, there is going to be zero hope to stopping theft and corruption in SA. There is a bigger fine, as I recall, for smoking on a London bus.

According to this website the cost of 20 L of Fire Resistant Hydraulic Fluid is R1,345.00

A quick Google says an industrial drum (which I assume these are and not the 20 L ones) can hold 200 L, so 1 drum would cost R13,450.00, across 5 drums, the guy scored R67,250.00 worth of fluid. Assuming he sold it below market value, lets say he offloaded it for R45,000.00.

Tack on the R10,000.00 fine, and he walks away with R35,000.00 and a note from the minister of hats saying he isn't allowed to own a gun (and being the upstanding citizen he is, I'm sure he will diligently follow that rule)

Crime certainly does pay in South Africa.
You are assuming Eskom is not going to recover what is due to them?

What isn't mentioned in the MyBB summary but which I saw on Eskom's release is that the 1yr/10k fine is "wholly suspended for 5 years". So he doesn't even have to pay the fine unless found guilty of a repeat offense in the coming years. What a win in the fight against corruption.
At least a criminal record and got fired?

That's a sound assumption (based on past events)
If you insist

Not sure why this is even news worthy tbh, just because it happened at eskom? There are probably hundreds of theft and bribery cases appearing in court everyday across the country, it's not like any of those are less news worthy, and catching just some small fish at eskom when there are billions of corruption outstanding feels like just a ploy to show people things are happening in eskom ahead of an election year. Rather gives us these sorts of news when there are real efforts being made, it starts to feels like every single little thing in eskom is being made into news these days...

This is surely grounds for promotion - since it's not mentioned anywhere that he was fired.

Crime does indeed pay. Steal oil worth thousands upon thousands and get a small R10K fine.
Win win - write off the R10K as a cost of doing business and continue to steal.

The fine is suspended for 5 years so there is no fine actually unless you get caught again in the next 5 years.

Of course, some say he got a hero's welcome at Tutuka after his conviction and he has put everything behind him and focusing on his work.

They should target the big fish. This is only small fry.
If this was private sector he would got fired or counseled.
Cadre deployment protects them self.

What are you saying now @HowTo? What gives you the impression he is not going to be fired or has already been fired?

Regarding the small fish and big fish, it's a flawed argument and there's nothing small fish about R1m fraud anyway, Eskom has over 40k employees, if half of them are small fish and benefit from the R1m small fish corruption, that's R20bn a year, see how fast it adds up? you don't even need De Ruyter's syndicates to bring Eskom to its knees.
