SARS eFiling 2023/2024

File and see and be honest. This year they hit me for returns from 2008 and 2009, although it came out in my favor, I would not mess with SARS, they have been cracking down hard on people who owe them.
yoh - on SARS page I can see all filed returns from 2008 but nothing before. I have no documentation if they query anything that happened before 2008.

Anyone still waiting for their returns? We're still waiting for my husband's. He had to submit so many documents, he hit the upload limit.

Found out that even if SARS delays issuing your assessment which reveals that you owe them money, if the assessment is issued more than one year after the return, you are issued with a penalty

My 2021 return was submitted in September 2022 but the assessment was only issued in October 2024. There was a R33 000 penalty added as the payment was late

I argued that it was not my fault that SARS took 25 months to issue an assessment, but was directed to a clause that shifts the onus on the taxpayer to ensure any tax liability is settled within the prescribed period. I should have written or communicated with SARS to say the assessment is outstanding

The reason is that I knew when submitting the assessment that I would be liable for a CGT payment and needed to take active steps to ascertain the amount

SARS have clauses for every eventuality. Since I "delayed" paying the penalty for 6 weeks which is the time it took SARS to respond to my query, SARS added R1022 interest to the penalty amount.

Did that, call centre will escalate the matter. Apparently not yet allocated to a person for the verificatiom audit. Eish brother.

For those who were "selected for audit", how long did it take?

I filed on 2024/07/29 and got audit notification the same day, my tax status has said "you refund is on hold subject to audit" ever since ie 68 days so far.

Filed 2024/07/28 Selected for audit/verification
Documents uploaded 2024/07/28
Escalated after 45 days
Escalated after 60 days
Gave up and said I will wait till January
2024/12/23 16:30:21 SARS - INCOME TAX VERIFICATION FINALISE - FINALISED WITHOUT CHANGES
Waiting on payment
2024/12/31 Received refund in bank account

Looked on the SoA and there this gem is shown "Selected for audit or verification No"
Looks and smells as if SARS was playing for time.

And they screwed me out of a months interest on the outstanding amount!
By my reasoning.
2024-08-01 30161 Original assessment
2024-10-31 Monthly interest on overpayment of prov tax- section 89quat(4)
2024-11-30 Monthly interest on overpayment of prov tax- section 89quat(4)
2024-12-23 Monthly interest on overpayment of prov tax- section 89quat(4)

2024-08-01 - 2024-09-01 Lets say this is the 21 days grace they have
2024-09-02 - 2024-10-01 interest owed
2024-10-02 - 2024-11-01 interest owed
2024-11-02 - 2024-12-01 interest owed
2024-12-02 - 2024-12-23 interest owed
If my math is correct 7.6% interest.

Pushed to the limit :p submitted today. I am a provisional payer just R4k that I needed to top up

Does anyone know how EXACTLY one checks as a provisional taxpayer you are all 100% compliant. So no outstanding fines or late / outstanding submissions etc etc etc. The efiling website is probably in the top 5 websites on the planet which are the worst at navigating or actually try to find out anything.

If you have one income, and interest below the max, then you aint.

Once you start to generate multiple incomes, then it becomes a story, as in prov tax payer.

You can always pull a statement of account to see if you have fines or interest charges added

You sound like a rich guy, register for provisional tax. It's the right thing to do.

so because I am retired and a provisional taxpayer that makes me rich? huh, logic = zero

secondly I just said I am a provisional taxpayer and then you say, "become a provisional taxpayer" huh x2

you understand that if one ONLY gets money from a pension fund then they are an individual taxpayer, but as soon as they have any other source of income, let it be a savings account getting more than +R23,800 per year (under 65) or a little rental, they then become a provisional taxpayer.

I am a provisional taxpayer because I don't have a pension fund as I do it myself, therefor I don't charge myself PAYE, I have to do it all manually so to speak.

Resubmitted my return on the last day, to include my medical deduction and only got allocated today. The last time it took them a day to process, so holding thumbs.

I e-filed on 10 December last year, was selected for verification (as expected), submitted all supporting docs but nothing has happened since.

How does one know if it has been allocated to anyone? I requested an SOA early in January but not a peep from SARS since.
