What format should the logbook be in? Should I use the logbook issued by SARS or can I keep an excel spreadsheet of my private & official travel?

I started using a excel logbook, but I just used the headings that SARS use in their logbook.

This system is a pain in the ass.

Use excel. It is much easier than the SARS log book. As said above use the same headings and keep all the required information eg reason for trip where business.

There is no specific format. SARS just wants a record of your business travels because claiming this deduction will decrease your tax liability. And there is a lot of fraud with taxpayers fraudulently claiming this deduction. If you have a logbook you have written by hand, use that. Don't then waste time with excel. it should just be legible and understandable.

I used excel last year and was audited. The auditor wanted me to include a column with private travel. So thats all I included for the past year.

you must have a detailed "daily" log book showing business and private mileage now. you no longer can just use the excel spread sheet anymore. you must also show opening and closing on a daily basis.

Per the 2014 SARS elogbook: “It is now compulsory to keep a logbook of all your business travel in which you record what travel was for business. There is no requirement to keep records of private travel. Private kilometres will be the difference between total kilometres (closing and opening kilometres) and business kilometres travelled”.

So I understand that you are only require to complete it for business trips and not a daily basis as per your comment? Or am I missing something?

Excel - Automatic SARS Travel Logbook

I made this excel file that automatically generates a SARS compliant "Travel Logbook". Submitted it about a month ago to our friends at SARS and they accepted it without question. I hope this helps.

100% correct.
The requirement is for business travelling only and logs must indicate from where, to where, kilometres traveled and purpose of the trip - logging the reason as "business" or "official" is not sufficient.

And don't forget to deduct the time time spent at your hourly rate for having to comply......

This is the first time I have to submit a logbook for work travel. Is only the logbook needed, or do I need to submit petrol slips too? What if I dont have them anymore?

I had a spreadsheet years back that I filled in with pen as I drove. When audited, I scanned and submitted that handwritten thing and SARS did not complain.
