I just got home to open a letter from sars telling me that they registered me as a provisional taxpayer. Firstly I have no business, I have no huge inheritance, I worked for about 2 years making under 10k at both jobs but enough to be a taxpayer. I am now unemployed and am a full time student. So why exactly am I a provisional taxpayer. I think a WTF is in order.

So I'm gonna call the call centre tomorrow asking them what's the story here. Gonna try hellopeter but I see they hardly ever reply to that. Any other ideas on what I should do to rectify this. All ideas welcome

I mean come on, I followed the law and payed tax for the 2 years I worked and they send me this crap. Hmmm wonder why people keep leaving this country (once the world wide recession I over you know they gonna be going again)

They always send you the provisional docs, you can ignore it but you will have to give in a tax return at the end of the year. Otherwise lots of admin in your side to prove you had no job.

Your threat of reporting SARS to Hellopeter is totally and absolutely the funniest thing I've seen.

Thanks for making me laugh, and laugh, and laugh.

Haha. Now I'm laughing. Kinda like the competition commision trying to fight wikileaks and the Swedish Press Freedom act?

They probably detected that you paid tax in the past, and now don't anymore. Instead of taking you off their system altogether they upgraded you to provisional tax payer status.

I've also received one of these provisional TAX letters. Wtf? I only earn a salary (and some interest on my cash in the bank). Can I just ignore these letters?

Hehehe, just send them an estimated income of R40 but include all your petrol, stationary and broadband bills and slips as "deductables". Maybe they'll pay you money...

I will never forget the first time I submitted my tax return...
In the 'Income' section, I put in the cents, when it was supposed to be rands only... ended up owing SARS something like R1.2 million or something
Got it sorted pretty easily though. :D

When you stopped working you were meant to have notified the taxman. You send them an affidavit and a letter explaining your story. Thats when they make you a "provisional" taxpayer. So technically SARS has been proactive with you and did it anyway. So when you do start working again you won't need to re-register as a taxpayer.

Doesn't mean you have to pay anything in, you still have to submit a return, even if it's all nil (unemployed people usually just attach the affidavit stating they're not working).

Suggestion: just call their call centre or mail them on their site. I consulted to SARS for 4 years, as kark as government dept.'s are SARS is way more efficient that SA's banks...and I've consulted to all of them, you'd be shocked at the stories I could tell ya...

when you're not employed anymore or fall under the tax law of south africa you usually de-register as a tax payer and re-register yourself once you have a job again.

I had to re-register myself the other day because I'm working mostly in South Africa now.

Good luck. I have to laugh when people threaten to leave South Africa over the behaviour of our revenue service.

And if your estimate is wrong you'll pay heavily.
