It's true, little Hatchies go for R250k nowadays

Most people could finance a decent solar installation by just cutting out take-ways, or their beer/braai budget..

Eikona wena!

We all needs our Nandos and beer/braais... those aren't luxuries anymore :p

In time and with economies of scale we'll get cheap(ish) Chinese electric cars. Basic small hatchbacks and smaller family sedans.

Currently the market seems to target the high end that just about no one can afford and they cram in all sorts of crap that no one wants. Flapping doors, self driving, cameras, ludicrous mode, and who knows what else.

Once the tech settles down a bit and you just want a basic car, an electric car should be cheaper to manufacture than an ICE.

Fewer drivetrain components, more interior space with less material cost, fewer components in general.

When's the last time you looked at car prices. A corolla hatchback starts at 400k. Hardly a symbol of luxury living.

Edit: R397K to be exact. For the entry level corolla hatch. (the new model)
I saw a few cheapies this morning on a thread for under 200k

Wait until all the gigafactories are going fullsteam. Who knows, maybe we'll get our own?

Not going to happen under ANC incompetence.
Until the owners of the ANC (The CCP) decides they need to sell their wares here. They'll do what needs doing to serve the masters. And we might just benefit from that this time.

These critisisms are all based on today's technology

In due course, we will be able to bypass Eskom entirely and have a first-world electrical supply. The Western Cape Govt has a plan for this

The boom in electric cars needs two major factors to get it going

1 - A reduction in the duty of fully imported electric cars (or a local assembly plant making them)
2 - A reliable electricity supply

Since the 1990's when carburettors disappeared, cars became a piece of metal(+), plastic, fabrick and wheels shaped to:
-Attrack & talk about.
-The EU inisiative...Make it a box that looks like a car, that feels like a lounge, thats connected, thats digitalised, it now have a mind that can be programmed, it has millions of sensors, it claims to be safe but theres just more accidents etc, AND whalla, you have a box that collects money, and does it sucks more money than fuel right off the bat. If it breaks, every part in the spare room is replaced till fault disappear, or its a LEMON.

But how are you going to get about and carry things / passengers / shopping / school children?
A bicycle won't cut it and public transport is abysmal

Nice info, thanks. At last someone that can give figures. My concern is that this is economically beyond over 90% of the SA population. Some info:

An interesting graph surfaced after the budget speech: -

113 000 salary earners pay 27% of all the PAYE.
15% of salary earners, pay 82% of all employees tax

When it comes to company tax the picture is even more skewed.
Just 0.1% of the companies pay 64% of the tax
4.7% of the companies pay 96% of the tax.

Currently, approximately three million South Africans account for 97% of the country’s personal income tax collected in 2019.

EV boom incoming?

Trump called it, we are just another Schithole !

For the price of the cheapest car on the SA market you can get a decent hybrid solar system with lithium batteries and enough panels to supply the average 3 bedroom house. If you can afford an electric car, you can afford that comfortably. People think nothing of financing a 500k car, but now they are having a frothy about getting solar for 150k.

Great. Let me show you where you are then if you can afford that in SA:

Currently, approximately three million South Africans account for 97% of the country’s personal income tax collected in 2019.

What PV system and EV can the rest afford?

They could? With half the country unemployed and 30% of the population on grants? And:

More scrap value of copper / aluminium electrical components and theft value of batteries... This is SA you're in, not the UK, Europe or USA.

And how will you do the annual Jhb - Dbn / Ctn holiday trip?

It could be very profitable with the CCP and the ANC as the facilitators of the import of electric cars to SA and the export of scrap copper and aluminium to China of hardly used components...

If you don't believe me have a chat with John Austin, former Chief Officer of Customs and Excise in Zimbabwe now resident in the UK who rumbled the ANC's car "export" business and spent 2 years in Chikurubi Max for his efforts...
