If we're going the imaginary route, then by that time, Eskom should have installed more capacity, or at least given up and let the private sector install Solar, Wind and other cheap generation.

Current generation would be sufficient if they charged over night too. Our nighttime load is half daytime, we have plenty of excess.

It's not the imaginary route. You won't buy a fuel vehicle in 10 years time. SA doesn't and never will have an EV infrastructure.

Overnight Eskom uses the unused capacity to pump water up mountains to pumped storage schemes to release to generate power during peak time. There goes the power you thought you had...

They've actually been using pumped storage during peak time, then supplementing with diesel (instead of gas, like they were designed for). ****ing Gwede could be adding more solar in 3-6months, but no, $$$ in pockets. Muppets.


I suspect SA will still see petrol car sales up until the 2040's.

No, but that is under ideal circumstances. The battery gets less efficient the longer it is used. What is the efficiency drop off over charging cycles?
Most Lithium are 80% at 10 years with daily cycles.

The obvious thing is not to daily cycle. Which is why you need bigger batteries in cars, the less you cycle it, the longer they'll last.

The ANC is very good at meeting deadlines, just look at their Digital Migration :laugh:
I see your point, but it does not address the point of this thread. EVs will come, demand for them will increase.

Electric vehicles are far from heavy adoption in SA. The cost of EV's here compared to the rest of the world is insanely high. Import tax is much higher than normal cars - 42% including the 'luxury' tax compared to 18% for regular vehicles.

That would make the price of the cheapest entry level model Tesla Model 3 about R1.2 Million compared to $45,000 in the USA or R3.9 Million for the Tesla Plaid S base model.

There should be an incentive to buy EV's not a ridiculous penalty. Many 1st world countries give rebates or tax credits if you buy an EV.

Yes, but here in SA, they won't be making $$$ on petrol/diesel sales, so they don't want many people buying them.
