Sulfation is the property of lead-acid batteries, where there is a gradual accumulation of lead sulfate crystals in the cells. In most cases, it is the cause of failure in lead-acid batteries. Sulfation mostly occurs when the battery is not fully charged, and thus the crystals continuously build up on the plates. When this process goes out of hand, it prevents the efficient conversion of chemical to electrical energy. Therefore, for other types of lead-acid batteries, it is essential to charge them every six months to prevent sulfation. However, in AGM batteries, sulfation is significantly reduced. Therefore, they can be stored for extended periods without needing a recharge.

There you go. Anyway, I forgot what we're arguing about.

There is fokol "boom" until there are half decent (relatively) affordable options. Discussing it hardly constitutes a boom.

I thought we were talking transformers and switch gear when I said you were grasping at straws?

The thread went to that because I stated that SA does not have the electrical infrastructure nor capacity to support an EV boom. The starry eyed optimists and desperately want it to be so's tried to tell me SA can support an EV boom because their homes have some PV panels and batteries. I showed that if Eskom does not come to the party, there can be no EV boom except for the upper middle class, which is small and shrinking.

I can just imagine the following to happen.

Eskom.....
"Our tariff increase application has been rejected by NERSA. Bwuhahahahaha...........now let's see how the idiot people going to get to work when we shut off the electricity and cry loadshedding"

The morning phone calls........
"Hallo Boss. Sorry but I can't come in today. I couldn't charge my car because of loadshedding"

And the ANC cadres are just laughing, looking at their bank accounts

What size solar panel system and batteries do you have at home? There's no way a run of the mill standard home installation is going to charge a car at night...
If you have ever operated a kettle, microwave or oven at home you already have the infrastructure at home to safely charge an electric car overnight ;)

I rate we go back to using ox wagons, low carbon footprint.

Right, now how many home PV systems can operate all those and charge a car overnight - all night. What size batteries do you need?

People size their PV systems based on their expected peak demand. In saying that to charge your vehicle to travel a 50km return trip would require a 8-10kwh of battery assuming you did the charging of the EV exclusively in the dark and Eskom is totally unavailable. That's probably a 80k investment if it were done independently just for the car. You also don't use your car every day and it is at home on weekends for some daytime charging so you could defer it for a full charge once a week for the average driver.

given the average drive in SA is 40km a day, and an ev averages about 15kw /100km, you'll need roughly 6kw hr a car.

well within capacity for eskom, or battery systems for that matter.
