SA's plan to deal with breakdown-ridden driver's licence card printing machine

South Africa's driving licence card printer is "obsolete and prone to constant breakdown", resulting in significant production backlogs.

This is according to transport minister Sindisiwe Chikunga, who assured that the backlogs aren't due to irregular activity at Driving Licence Testing Centres (DLTCs) but result from long maintenance periods and breakdowns.

Out of interest, does the world accept digital licenses yet or must they be printed?

I mean locally we possibly could and setup a verification system but it will be pointless if globally it’s not accepted especially for those of us who travel a lot.

We should just release digital licenses in Apple Wallet :)

For **** sakes just switch to an Electronic one for the folks that can and don't need to bog down the printer queue when it is working
My foreign license is on my phone - biometrically verified

It sounds like they're replacing the one old machine with one new machine? I hope they're smarter than that, but...

What happens if you lose your phone?

(Serious question. I've had phones stolen twice in the last two years.)

Breakdown prone?
It's normal wear and tear when you have ONE machine to do the entire countries licenses.

How about a second machine for redundancy??
A 2nd machine? The cANCer cannot brain that much to actually do that much braining.

I'd hope there's a facility to de-authorise your old device as well.
They'd have to reauthenticate to the app every time they wanted to...something?(look at your drivers license and admire your pretty face?)
What do you do with your old drivers license when it gets lost or stolen

Now when the government issued you with a lifetime license in your ID back in the day we had none of these issues...

But you want to bring in a "Tax" for the citizens to pay every 5 years. On-top of that you refuse to use that money to keep the actual machine that makes it possible maintained...

I'm crying for you, I truly am...
