SAT-3 still broken?

In another thread - just before the forums went down last week -(http://www.myadsl.co.za/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3069) someone posted a notice from the SAIX noticeboard about Sat-3 being broken, and international traffic re-routed via SAFE, thus the poor international latency. Does anyone have any updates or inside info on this? It's been more than a week now. Getting rather desperate since I'm heavily dependent on good international latency (via ISDN), and SAT-3 in particular. The SAIX noticeboard seems to have been secured so got no viewing access there anymore. Tx in advance.

whahaha, just went to the SAT-3 website for the first time to see if they say anything. for a $600 project they have the worst website i have ever seen. It is so budget, viva la Frontpage. what a joke. on to the thread at hand, I don't know if that is the reason, if it is going via SAFE then ur traffic is being routed via Asia and there networks are normally good, maybe it is just cause everyon is using it. Would be interesting to find out though. Probably find some rural okes have gone swimming and found some Copper cable to sell, that is why it is down.

Hiya,

I posted before it went down and got the info from imaginets website:

Source: Telkom SAIX
Telkom SAIX are doing emergency maintenance on the SAT 3 Cable running to London(Telecity).

SAIX Network Notice Update
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Reference ID : STT000000003489
Failure Type : Planned Work
Problem Description : London(Telecity) - SAT 3 Cable Impact : All customers will expierence higher international latency during this time.
Time Down : 24 May, 2004 at 09:00:00 (SAT) Time Up : None Sites : London(Telecity) Services Affected : International Connectivity Update Description : All Saix international traffic is rerouted to the SAFE Cable.
Estimated Time to Repair : N/A

It also affects me since all my online gaming is on overseas servers and although I can manage with a 450+ ping and not my usual 200...people get lag paranoid and I usually get booted out of games now :(

Not sure if telkom would tell imaginet what exactly is wrong and if people can still browse and download I doubt they would worry about ping times, but I'll phone tommorrow and see If imaginet can shed some light.

Got this from the Rhodes University forums:

quote:
TENET have informed us that SAIX is experiencing network problems on its international links, which will directly affect Rhodes users browsing international sites.

It appears that there are two seperate problems contributing to this:

The first is that the SAT-3 fibre optic cable that runs up the West coast of Africa has been out of commission for about a week. As a result, all international traffic is being routed via the SAFE cable to the Far East. This has a small effect on the latency of traffic, but is not the cause of the current instability.

It appears that there is a circuit failure somewhere between London and New York, which is resulting in intermittent connection problems to sites in the Americas. Further details of this are not available at the moment, nor is an estimate of when the issue will be resolved.

Hehe - I wonder though if the "emergency SAT-3 maintenance" has anything to do with the launch of unshaped ADSL tomorrow?

Hi Guys

Sitting at work here I usually ping places like Gamespot.com and other overseas sites to see if the SAT-3 Cable is back or not.. was getting yesterday around 570ms-640ms this morning it seems the work like is back to 339ms to Gamespot.com can someone without a diginet line(like ADSL,ISDN) check your pings I think the Sat3 is back but I want to make sure.
Regards

Hi Cerberus - at about 2am this morning I was getting pings in the 300ms range to Europe and about 350-400 to USA. With ISDN it was even quicker - about 250-270ms - so definitely looks like SAT-3 is back.
