The Interior Ministry decision accompanies the launch of a visa regime allowing holidaymakers from 49 states to visit one of the world’s most closed-off countries.

Saudi Arabia said on Saturday it would issue fines for 19 offences related to public decency, such as immodest dress and public displays of affection, as the Muslim kingdom opens up to foreign tourists.

Can't blame them for not allowing other countries. The image these countries portrays to the world warrants them not being allowed into their country.

Families of victims of September 11 would disagree but who knows? Besides, not many people would want to visit Saudi for fun. BTW, people from outside already work there.

France, Spain, US need to come up with urgent strategies to counter this threat. Will this reduce cape town tourist numbers as well?

This is a joke right ?

Attempting to diversify an economy which is 90% dependent on oil exports might seem like a good idea. Along with widespread 'underemployment' in cushy state jobs. Something's gotta give...

There is already a huge 'tourist' industry, but it is highly seasonal and revolves around religious rituals. Spreading visitors around the year seems a logical step. Whether it is practical is another matter.

Too bad Dubai thought of that 20 years ago, not sure what Saudi could offer in the region that you won't find in Dubai (without the fear of getting arrested for the slightest thing...)

Nothing like leaving the double-bed hotel room with my girlfriend for a spot of lunch with a glass of wine, then changing into a costume and bikini to walk hand in hand along the beach.
