How I saved R700 in petrol tax a month

Switching to an electric vehicle (EV) reduced my monthly tax bill by around R729. This is because roughly half the price of every litre of fuel sold in South Africa is taxes.

For unleaded 95 petrol, the general fuel levy (GFL) is currently about R3.85. Every litre of diesel includes carries a R3.70 GFL. The Road Accident Fund (RAF) contributes a further R2.18 per litre.

R729 is not much, would be more enticed if it was R2000+ in fuel savings.

What about the financing cost for the GWM Ora 03? Or was the Kia Sonet traded in, and the monthly repayment stayed the same? What about insurance, did that stay the same or get less? If not to any of these questions, R700 per month was not, even though less fuel taxes was paid.

"We saved money by not spending money"

Mindblowing.

I'd rather buy a conversion kit to lpg and ride that in the city keep the diesel for long distant rough trips. Still not sold on the whole electric car thing

I am waiting for electric bicycles to become cheaper.

I will mosy likely get a licence. Since I want it to be fast enough so that criminals cant catch me.

Then I can use my solar system to charge the bike. And then save.

This.

EVs are an alternative to ICE, not a replacement, currently.

Will the criminals be chasing you for your wallet? Because no-one is going to be interested in your electric bike!

I'm also watching the price of entry-level BYD cars, and 8kW/12kW inverters. I've got loads of north-facing roof space, very low electricity needs in the house, and a short daily commute. I really think it’s gonna be possible soon.

Some time since I have posted on this forum but I find it amazing how many people respond to the OP without even reading the article and totally miss the main point he appears to be making which is what the impact switching to EV's would have on tax collections in SA

The comrades will make a plan; they will tax electricity or something else.
