Say you had a R180 000 budget for a car.

I would only be looking at Bmw 320D F30.

Unless you like spending money on feul you can also look at lexus GS 250/350 or newer IS 250/350, rocket solid cars but they sip at 12L/100km where 320D can do 6L/100km
look no further, 320D for the win.

Had that budget a few months back from an insurance payout. Got the Honda Amaze CVT. 2nd hand 2020 model with 13K on the clock. For commuting and comfort it is very decent. Just a bit gutless on the power side.

Yeah a friend of mine got the Amaze. Brand new. But no power. I would still go with the Hyundai Accent rather.

Seeing as OP still hasn't given us their requirements, I'm just throw this out there:

Hyundai i20
Hyundai Accent
Kia Rio
Honda Jazz
Honda Ballade
Suzuki Swift

Any of the above are reliable cars and if you look around you should be able to get a 3 or 4 year old model with less than 50,000 km for around R180k (depending on the model and specs).

Have you considered a Forrester?

Seriously though, I would probably look at an older T2 3.0 V6 TDi Touareg, they are just about bomb proof, run to high mileage with few issues and are great to drive.

A 320D for R180 000K ? for what... 15K a month for maintenance?
Have you actually owned a diesel BMW?

I have, 3 actually including 2 x 2L and one 3L (current)

It's one of the lowest maintenance cars in terms of cost, if looked after properly and service intervals are adhered too.

Get a good example and you won't look back

Well since Op still hasn't listed requirements how about a minibus. Make some money on the side whilst your at it, just be prepared for a few incidents with various "associations"

I hope it's not the classic Landy case, a car to drive and a car to fix :)

Lol. As stated low maintenance cost.

I've only ever had to replace oil, filters & tyres brakes at normal service intervals.

Only big ticket items is damper pulley @ about 150 000km

Kia Rio
Hyundai i20
Renault Clio 4 (new Clio 5 is arriving soon though)
Ford Fiesta
Mazda 2
Peugeot 208
Opel Corsa 1.0T

If you want something sitting high then look at Renault Duster.

All the above are great cars, had my Clio 4 about 3 years now and never missed a beat, even parked it in some rather sketchy places without it being touched, lol. Maybe give them all a test drive and see which you prefer.
