Say you had a R180 000 budget for a car.

Exactly. Hence why he’s asking what everyone else would buy to get some inspiration...
Buying a car is not about inspiration. As has been said many times before, it is a depreciating asset. So what are the needs, as opposed to the want.

Well then you're definitely not a car person. If all you see in a car is being able to get from point A to B, go buy a Hyundai Atos.

I'm a car person, and I definitely get inspired by how a car looks, drives and performs. It may be a depreciating asset, but if you're spending hundreds of thousands of rands, you'd want that depreciating asset to be the right choice for you.

Well now you just sound like you’re from the fun police.
That is Splinter. Anything outside of eat, poop and sleep is merely an obstacle in the way of mankind's evolution towards it's perfect supremacy or perfect decay.

Umm - I actually love cars. But the OP didn't say he wanted a drivers car. Just that he wanted to spend money on one. I have an M235i btw. Said it a few times before?

As for RedViper, you are just a salty sniper from the corners.

Owning a 2017 (50 000km) Honda Ballade, I would suggest you steer clear of the Ballade. Car is absolute 'c**p' and the after sales service horrendous.

Water was dripping into the door panel when washing the car or driving in the rain. Last week, the dealer replaced the window weather strip under warrantee. Took the car home and tested the weather strip with the garden hose. Water did not drip this time, but gushed straight into the door panel and poured out the bottom of the door sill. Called the service advisor and enquired whether the workshop tested the leak after replacing the seal. Was told it was tested with a high pressure hose and there were no leaks :) :). This is just one of numerous issues with Honda.

Buy a Honda Jazz. Yes it's light on fuel....but best part.

You can sell for the amount you bought it for. 8 years ago I sold my friend's 2006 Jazz 30k on the clock for 80k. Today, well that car sells 2nd hand for 90k. wtf really? Just look at Jazz prices second hand. you will understand.

I wont buy a ford or mazda (same factory) and honestly they fall apart and reliability. VW is overpriced for what you get sometimes.

It's called inflation. A brand new Mazda 323 cost R3,200 in 1981, but costs R15k now, so your logic is flawed.

Had that budget a few months back from an insurance payout. Got the Honda Amaze CVT. 2nd hand 2020 model with 13K on the clock. For commuting and comfort it is very decent. Just a bit gutless on the power side.
Yeah a friend of mine got the Amaze. Brand new. But no power. I would still go with the Hyundai Accent rather.
What engine do those Honda's have?
I had a 1.3 CVT Jazz but it had zero bottom end, pulled well if you floored it but irritating having very little in between. Also drank fuel in traffic, it easily got to 8L/100km but on the flip side very light on the open road, under 6L/100km.

Got the 1.5 CVT now, much nice car to drive.

The new Jazz now starts with a 1.2l, same engine in the Amaze.

VTEC is the best part, when that bad boy hits 6000rpm and that CVT is screaming at you :p

The amaze is a 66KW 1.2 l engine. Comfortable but hungry in heavy traffic as you said. A little more power would probably help the fuel efficiency as it would not need to be floored up every hill I recon so I also want something else with the 1.5 next time. My wife drives a 1.5 l balade and it has a lot more power. Won't buy a balade again though as it sits way to low on the road. Enjoying the slightly higher clearance of the Amaze and my father in law has the HRV or BRV (forget which) and that is probably what I want to move towards.

I've been driving Hondas for the past 10 years and I have not had a single day's problems. To date I had:
- 2011 2.0L Accord Auto (got rear ended on my way back from work and I sold it)
- 2015 1.5L Ballade CVT (got rear ended on my way to work and I sold it)
- 2016 1.5L Jazz CVT (gave it to my father in law an it is his daily driver)
- 2017 1.5L Ballade CVT Exec (my current daily driver)
- 2019 2.0L CRV (my wife's daily driver)

The 1.5L engine has plenty of power for normal use. It does get a bit noisy when paired with the CVT when pushing the revs but it was never designed to be a race car.

The HRV is a very practical car based on the Jazz platform but you would probably want to get the 1.8L as it is a heavier body. It is quite popular.

My sister in law lives in Canada and there every second person drives a Honda. The CRV and Civic have been some of their best selling cars for years and they have so many versions of the Civic that I have lost count last time I was there. My sister in law has a 2017 Honda Pilot 7 seater which has a 3.2L V6 engine.

Look around when driving at cars that older than 20 years or so. There is a reason that most of the older models are Hondas. Have a look at this:

Update:
Vehicle went back to Honda. This time they found that the passenger door was slightly misaligned. They only realigned the door and returned the vehicle. Tested the leak at home.... and it's still there. Noticed that the gap between the plastic moulding and the weather strip is a good few mills in comparison to the driver side door.

If all doors are closed and you try opening and closing the aligned door, it bounces back. Extra effort required to get it closed. As a freebie for the inconvenience caused .... they left scratch marks on the plastic panel that houses the button for operating the front passenger window. Not taking the vehicle back. They may suggest changing the spark plugs to stop the leak. I intend spraying the insides of both the front and rear passenger doors with a rust inhibiting coating to prevent rusting. and cut my losses.

This was one of the many negative experiences I had with Honda.

This is my first and last Honda.
