The Proteas lost five ICC ranking points after the drawn series, while Bangladesh gained six. That makes no sense

by Neil Manthorp | 04 August 2015

The irony about the sort of "cricket knowledge" that is sought after by players and coaches is that much of it is acquired subliminally. The more one actively seeks "the way", the more it can hide itself.

What did South Africa’s selectors, management and players learn from the monsoon-ruined tour of Bangladesh before they flew out to various parts of the world on Monday night? Very little on the face of it, although some benefits may only be seen later.

In batting order, we do know that Stiaan van Zyl has both the desire and temperament to bat at the top of the order, and that his gentle, medium-paced bowling is rated appreciably by captain Hashim Amla. He is to be pursued with, as is Dean Elgar.

Faf du Plessis remains a fixture at number three with Amla at four. Temba Bavuma’s single innings in the Test series did more for his reputation than any other single contribution. Never mind the grittiness and determination that everybody noticed. It was his willingness to hit the ball rather than retreat into a defensive shell when the innings was imploding around him during the first Test in Chittagong that stood out.

For me the whole tour was a farce, a complete waste of time and money. It served little purpose. Yes, it allowed a few new names into the arena and some got the chance to show us glimpses of their potential.

However, the manner in which we lost points in our test rankings is nothing less than absurd. The Tigers, as a team, are the net winners in this tour, if that's at all possible. The fans lost a lot. The Saffer team lost the most in losing the points and matches the way they did.

In many respects, the South African team have themselves to blame for accepting a tour in the middle of the monsoon season. They should have known better.

From the outset their attitude to this tour lack the sincerity they give to a tour of Australia, India or England. Consequently, I feel, it was their undoing. Not enough intensity. Not enough professionalism. Something that is very unlike the team. Why!
