Brackenfell racism row: Complaint lodged against EFF’s Nazier Paulsen
Paulsen used terms like "brown pets" and "monkey face" in reference to coloured people who side with white residents in Brackenfell.
The Brackenfell High School saga has taken another twist after the Democratic Alliance (DA) took action to refer Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MP Nazier Paulsen to the Parliamentary ethics committee. Paulsen’s use of “offensive and derogatory” terms referring to coloured people have caused outrage on social media and left the DA seething.
Paulsen used terms such as “brown pets” and “monkey face” when decrying what he believes is complicit racism within the coloured community in the Western Cape suburb of Brackenfell, which became the latest epicentre for
festering racial tension in South Africa last week.
PAULSEN IN HOT WATER OVER RACIAL SLURS
Several posts on Paulsen’s Facebook page in recent days contain language directed at coloured members of the Brackenfell community and beyond, who the EFF Mp says are being taken for a ride by their white counterparts who Paulsen says are undeserving of coloured support.
“You like being the brown pet to white people. Your entire backward, racist family with defend your ‘brownsplaining’ because it’s an achievement for brown people to associate with white people,” he wrote on 10 November. “You’ll even invite those white people to family functions to show off your ‘achievement’.”
“You’ll even defend white racists just so that you can be accepted and your brownness overlooked. I’ve got news for you. You’re like their tame pet. They tell their friends and families that you’re not like other brownies,” he continued.
“Brown pets, you know mos who you are. Over here with your ‘dry’ and ‘damaged’ reasoning,” he said in a post a day later. In another post, he declared that “nothing beats taking the p**s out of white people’s brown pets”.
Brownsplainers history will judge all of you. You will never be absolved. You must remember 9 November 2020. On this…

DA SEETHING OVER REMARKS ABOUT COLOURED COMMUNITY
DA Chief Whip Natasha Mazzone said on Monday 16 November that Paulsen’s rhetoric is “dehumanising, derogatory, and offensive to the coloured community”.
“The Democratic Alliance (DA) has laid a complaint against the EFF Member of Parliament, Nazier Paulsen with Parliament’s Ethics Committee, following a series of very offensive and derogatory posts about the Coloured community on his social media,” she announced.
“We call on the Ethics Committee to meet urgently in order to deliberate on his offensive remarks as we cannot allow a situation where Members of Parliament openly use derogatory and offensive language against an entire community and get away with it.”
Paulsen responded to the complaint on his Facebook page with a rather bizarre riposte that demonstrated a less-than-bothered attitude towards his colleagues from across the bench and their grievances.
“This one’s for you,” he wrote, presumedly addressing the DA. “Name an Italian War Hero. There’s none!”
“Please report this to the Ethics Committee. I’m insulting an entire nation.”
