Problem with green ID books

A third of Home Affairs offices can't issue smart ID cards because their systems have not been modernised.

Therefore, South Africa's old green barcoded ID book remains the only option for many citizens who don't live near a Home Affairs or bank branch with the necessary equipment.

Just give the young ones new ID cards and the problem will sort itself out in a generation.

Jeez.

Nonsense, the old green ID book is still perfectly usable, the real problem is it interferes with the DA's roll out of Smart ID which are not a good idea for the man on the street. Make sure you KNOW who the party you vote for really supports, and the roll out of NWO smartID's is definitely not going to help humankind one little bit.

How long has these numpty been in office? How long before people realise he is ANC-lite.

"That’s why we’re encouraging people — if they are able to — to get the smart ID card, because it is a more secure document,” said Schreiber.

How does that fix:
"Smile ID’s Digital Identity Fraud 2024 report found that the South African ID book was the most targeted identity document for fraudsters in Africa.

In 34% of the cases where its know-your-customer detection flagged fraudulent attempts to access services, a green ID book was used."

Having a card isn't going to stop the fraudulent use of ID books surely?

What's not stated is what percentage of adults have Smart ID vs Green ID.
I suspect the 34% related to the ratio of Smart ID to Green ID in that population group.

The "smart" id is not smart. Why does the government require you to provide a photo copy of it when you apply for a driving license?

Total cock up.
If it was really smart, there wouldn't be a need for a card, just query the home affairs database.

What happens the young ones live in the areas where they can't get smart ID's?

Um, no. Most ID fraud cases use the green ID book.

Smart ID which are not a good idea for the man on the street.

Why not?

The "smart" id is not smart. Why does the government require you to provide a photo copy of it when you apply for a driving license?

Because when the government realised computers could be used for their departments in the later 1990's, there was no co-ordination. Each department devised their own system and none is compatible with any other department. The Defence Force alone had over 6 different systems they realised they needed to co-ordinate to speak to each other. That project costy million and I doubt it will ever work correctly.

A bit over 100 days. They inherited 30 years of incompetence from the ANC.

It's far more difficult to change info and photos on the Smart ID.

You're going to allow a second hand car dealer or Truworths assistant access to the home affairs database to see if it is you applying for credit?

Ahhh. The tried and trusted excuse for the DA. Basically the DA's version of the race card excuse. So how long will be an accepted time for him to rectify, the home affairs offices not delivering their core function? Would have thought that would be a "day 1" type of thing to fix. But I tend to not discriminate who I hold accountable.

Read only access. Like the bank numpties have access to.

I'm not DA. Unfortunately, the 30 years of ANC incompetence in the department has only been exposed since the DA took it over 100 days ago. Do you expect anyone to be able to fix 30 years of incompetence quickly?

How quickly would you be able to analyse what is wrong and get infrastructure installed to rectify the situation? This isn't a simple home or business system. It's country and worldwide.

Ah yes. day 1 fix. That sounds like an ANC promise right there.

That wasn't the question. Let me put it another way. I have a green ID book. I get an ID card. What's to stop someone presenting a green ID book when impersonating me? My getting an ID card isn't going to make green ID books disappear magically.
