Scramble to renew driver's licences before deadline

South Africans are scrambling to renew their driver’s licences before the 31 August deadline, but problems with the online booking system are causing frustration among motorists.

Last year, the transport minister extended the grace period to renew driving licences that expired between 26 March 2020 and December 2020 until 31 August 2021.

With the deadline now less than three weeks away, many South Africans are rushing to renew their licences.

Booking system is a joke - written by a novice with defects.

Suggestions:
1. Make license last a lifetime.
Why do we need to keep renewing our licenses.
What's the reason for 5 year expiry?
Did it stop accidents?
Did it stop illegal licenses?
NO - So cancel this waste of resources.

2. Make you pay in advance - this will stop scalping.
Redeploy cashiers to testers.

3. Make all paperwork digital and filled in online.

4. Allow opticians to upload eye-test

5. Show statistics of booking.

Let's send our recommendations to @MbalulaFikile

If you have to ask this - you sincerely don't understand how the cANCer operates.

/cANCer: Will it work? Yes. Then we cannot adopt it. Will seem too western. Africans are bred to suffer.
/cANCer: Will it make money for our connected cares? Yes. OK let's go.

I managed to get a booking by logging in at 19:00 and grabbing a cancellation. If you do this, be prepared to be flexible regarding where you go. And be prepared to go the next morning.

Also get an eye test before hand. And bring a pen.

The booking system is a joke, companies opened up where their only job is to book licenses for a fee, something that was supposed to be free.
As South Africans seem to be generally lazy and wait till the last minute, last year when I booked mine it was actually not that bad when the system reopened, I started in June for the end of July and I had my license done on early July. Just had to keep checking the system.
They also panic over their license expiring when it's just the card.

I tried for months to get a slot. It worked really well in the beginning but as the article said people have manipulated the system and now sell slots that were supposed to be free. It's disgusting. I had no option but to go down that route and pay someone for a slot. Got the appointment the same week.

100% agree with number 1. Why are we renewing? They should just ask us to update our photo but even then that's not necessary. We don't renew our IDs... let's not give them any ideas though! maybe just do an eye test every 5 years. Is that what they need to check? Or can we just renew it like a tv licence. Pay them a fee and not have to go through all this crap at early hours of the morning. It's all for money at the end of the day.

After 18 mths of a digitisation scramble, why are some of our government departments so incompetent? It boggles the mind that we are still not able to all our renewals, queries etc online.

Paid R99 for an eye test and certificate at an optometrist, but the ****ers still made me do the eye test
I wanted to do the eye test but they said I couldn't. Had to go to an optometrist but they were all out and it was too late to keep the appointment in any case. So I said stuff it. This was January and I haven't seen a speedcop since then except when doing what their name says.

I have an appointment for Wednesday at the Verulem testing station. Need to go try do my eye test today. A bit worried about that as my vision is impacted by Bells Palsy currently. Hoping the optometrist will understand and be lenient.
