Scrum Master Training Useful to Dev?

Hey!

Looking for training to do and since all my dev courses are being denied figured I'd try something different.
Old senior mentioned this might be useful but not seeing it.. What are your thoughts?

Alternatively, recommend some training on something amaze-balls that every dev should know about...and no, not dapper

Not in scope of work etc... eg. Asking to do a Java course when I'm a .Net Dev or HDP training. Even BI courses are a nope lately lol.

Scrums have a relatively low uptake in South Africa, even amongst the agile-ista.

Way above R10k budget
TorqueIT has it (R8.8k) but only have Bytes as a SP on portal at R15k

I think it would be more beneficial for you to find a company that will help you grow as a dev / resource, rather than finding a course that they will agree to sponsor.

But that's just me.

Fair point but I have my reasons for staying.. Having been to other dev houses and the like. not much changes.

I suppose you're right. A job is a job at the end of the day. You collect a salary to perform tasks. It just makes it a lot easier if the company ensures you're happy performing those tasks.

Anything you learn is useful in some way. SCRUM Master training (if you aren't paying for it yourself) is something that's worthwhile IMO.

From the guys that have done it I've heard that it actually gives you a much better understanding of how SCRUM/agile stuff is supposed to work. We all think we have a good understanding but there is stuff most of us don't know.

Will make a difference of exactly JACK with regards to the way you code though...

Thanks for this. I'm ok with it helping my "marketability" so . Still too expensive though. I'll be going on Excel training it seems.

why don't you do it yourself in your own time? still makes you more marketable and has no strings

Scrum is useless if you don't have buy-in from the entire business. It needs to be enforced throughout the SDLC, and not just at the design-dev-test part. This is why it fails a lot of the time, especially in SA where most businesses are still fairly traditional in their approach.

As for the training, being a scrum master is really boring work if you don't like meetings. If you do, then go for it. I'm not sure how much it would improve your marketability, as it would depend on what you already do. If you're a technical resource then it would be more of a lateral move, as opposed to a promotion...

I'd rather go for scrum training than excel training. You can use it down the line or add it to your cv. Excel training is a waste of time. I've gone on several courses and while excel is handy you barely use it.(Happy for you to point out where a dev would use it) Companies can be tightarsed when it comes to training. I pushed for digital training so I could learn something new but nope, they wanted to upskill the whole team. Never happened. Ended up paying for it myself even though I changed direction after I finished the course.

Best thing you could do though is raise your hand everytime they start talking k*k in the standups and tell them it is a breakaway. Comes with the added benefit of making the more fragile in the team cry (and that's not a joke, the water work are real!)
