Now look at all the pedos in jail. All poor. Child rapists... poor. Children getting abused by uncles etc in poor families. Go check out the lists of registered child sex offenders. Mostly poor. Why? Because most people and most criminals are poor.
or, maybe - they cannot afford the best attorneys / advocates / senior counsel.
assume for a minute you are charged with a similar offence.
do you have R30k right now to drop on attorney, then the end of next week another R20k.
matter is going to high court, so another R50k for an advocate.
so over a 3 month period you need to fork out R100k over and above your regular monthly expenses - and there is a very good chance you could lose your job.

another example - you and i are charged with the same offence.
i go into court with the likes of william booth or ben matthewson.
either will chew up and spit out a relatively young prosecutor.
you go in with a young legal aid attorney, to be faced with a prosecutor having a number of years experience.
high probability i'll emerge unscathed, you - not so much.
it's an unfortunate reality.
our own prisons (remand sections) are overcrowded with people who should not be there - ppl charged with non-violent offences, and others where bail has been set at an amount they cannot afford
