Sorry I meant hypothermia - (low body temperature) .

That is what I thought you meant, which is why I said what I said. I don't remember the details but the start of the UTD160 was cold I think due to altitude and start time, so runners had to dress accordingly and as it warmed up removed warmer clothing.

My brother did the Ultra Drakensberg last year which is a 100 mile trail race and the stories he tells of how he had to keep his head going just to finish are insane. Like how he took a break to remove warm clothing and eat something, started chatting to a guy for like 10 minutes before he realised he was hallucinating and he was alone.
I remember on Joe Rogan, he interviewed one of the top ultra trail runners, a woman that had just won a race (ie 1st overall) and she admitted to having a "white out" twice in the same race. Basically she was still awake but completely blind and deaf.
She just walked it off and caried on running after her sight returned.

That is pretty much exactly what a marathon is all about. Most of the training revolves around learning to keep going regardless.

I think (at least in my head), it should be about keeping going regardless up to a point... you should be training to be able to ignore the messages that say you should probably stop, but still be aware enough to stop when the messages get serious. Granted I'm not a runner in the slightest, so have no real idea if that sort of thing is even feasible.

Never.. the vaccine is safe as houses.

Only idiots don't get vaxxed before running an ultramarathon, it saves you from dying.

But it's odd though that those athletes are all jabbed and that those excess deaths occured during the two years following vaccination.

We do know that the vaccines cause blood vessel damage, but surely it cannot be linked?

Most likely a underlying heart condition that only manifested itself due to the race ???.

Remember soccer player Christian Erikson who had a cardiac arrest (not blocked arteries) during a game - he is top tier athlete and I am sure the team doctors did EKG's on him more than once during training.

His heart's pacemaker system just went wobbly and stopped - he now has a ICD implanted in case it happens again.

Stats from the UK for death by vaccination status are interesting:

Data from Table 1:

What were the requirements for entry in terms of vaccination status for the Comrades?

Those 100 miler's are something else. The Karkloof one is coming up
My moms twin is in his 70's and is still doing unsupported ultra trail runs in the USA. Off the top of my head I remember him speaking about the Hurt 100, Badwater, Hardrock 100. He's just bones and sinew, I'm not sure how he manages.

When did they announce the comrades was open ? (I only heard of it last week, but I don't follow it)
It must have been quite some time ago seeing that the entries opened on 23 March and closed on the 16th of May.

Anyone know exactly what the cause of death was for either athelete? I know people get have issues with privacy, but when someone dies in a public endurance event, it seems pretty important that the public understand why. I know way too many couch potatoes who've decided that completing Comrades is a bucket list item even though they've never even done a 5k.

In order to qualify to run the Comrades Marathon you need to run a standard marathon (42,2km) in a time of less than 4:50.

Courtney Dauwalter, epic athlete.

So the Comrades deaths should not be attributed to the distance - there are races that are way further. Consider the Moab 240 mile race for instance.
Also ,the time of year (thus temperatures) cannot be blamed - consider the Badwater Ultra Marathon, 130 miles in Death Valley, California where temperatures frequent 54 degrees Celsius during the race.
My point being, the Comrades race itself, or organizers are not to blame.

With the race being pushed to end of August, many runners' training is impacted. Usually, with the race being in early June, the majority of training can be done in summer and autumn. This year, the bulk of training needed to be done through winter - and this can be brutal in the Highveld for instance. Colds & Flu, low light early mornign etc all can have negative impacts.

The onus is on the runner - and the effect that COVID may have had on individuals is key.
