This is for all the network specialists on the forum and ProAsm if he still reads here.

1. How safe is sentech's mywireless network?
2. Are l33t people hacking this new technology sh*tless while sentech gets their act together (if they ever will) and reselling the bandwidth causing other people's bandwidth to suck?
3. or is everybody just getting screwed in the eye?

Somebody asked me this question at work this morning. Some intelligent replies would be appreciated.

they have 3 "tiers"of authentication

You need a valid modem with a valid IMEI for their network, you have 2 sets of passwords, i think they only allow you to set one though... one connects you to the tower/infranet... the other connects you to the internet, then gives you your IP etc.

As far as I know the password and username is sent in plain text, so if you have the right equipment you can "steal" someones password etc, but keep in mind they log IMEI and Usernames etc, so if there IS hacking going on, I doubt they'll struggle to find the culprits.

I can quote them my modem IMEI and they'll know EXACTLY who I am....

IMO, and my speed is slow today, I think there is a serious problem somewhere, doubt its their bandwidth, but I think there must be a bottle neck SOMEWHERE... just dunno where...

AFAIK IMEI blocking is not currently implemented.

Infranet now allows setting of passwords for both network and ISP levels.

MyWireless, as a technology, is probably as secure as 56k dialup, or ADSL on copper is. Probably a bit more, since it's rather sophisticated signalling. For PPP authentication they're using CHAP, which is reasonably secure, and is used all around. Telkom's ADSL, in fact makes use of PAP authentication which isn't encrypted whatsoever.

The static IP thing was probably just a configuration option that some dimwit had neglected on their auth/ppp servers.

All in all, I prefer my bandwidth to come from the the dark side -- Telkom.

Just between us, Sentech has the ability to assign static IP addresses, its an OPTION within the server's admin program or something
