Johannesburg - Gold producer DRDGold is mourning the death of its chief security officer, who was shot during an armed robbery at its plant in Brakpan on Monday night.

Bart Coetzee died following a shootout with an armed gang at the gold producer's ERGO plant, during which a quantity of calcine concentrate, estimated to contain up to 17kg of gold, was stolen.

I wonder if these are part of the illegal mining syndicates. Guess would be yes as they have the connections to move it - it is frightening that they're now targeting legitimate miners/refiners. There was also that failed hit on that other transport where they killed the guards but failed to get away with the gold because the flying squad got there fast.

It'd be interesting to find out the details because these refineries are high security areas and some actually fly the concentrate to prevent chances of robberies.

Woman arrested after deadly robbery at gold mine in Witpoort

On Tuesday, police nabbed a woman in Brakpan and recovered gold, number plates, an undisclosed amount of cash, woven baskets, iron buckets filled with gold dust and spades.

“While police are appealing to the public for information towards apprehending the suspects, the public is warned not to confront the suspects, as they are heavily armed.”
