Crime has, for the last sixty or so years, been an essential part of ANC policy and making the general population defenseless will throw open EWC to any gang that covets any possessions or property of others.

Coupled with a defenseless population will be an exponential increase in rape, torture and murder rates whenever a home or farm is attacked by the comrades.
The majority of people don't own a firearm anyway. There'd be no need to ban guns to leave the general population defenceless against armed thugs nor are there that many people who are currently protected from rape, torture or murder by the small number of legally owned guns.

That amnesty is very likely illegal. The paperwork was signed in August already, and the approval was only given this week. To boot, there is a standing court order that says that SAPS cannot take in firearms on expired licences, and that people can request the handed in firearms back, and should get them back. GFSA has the pony gripped by the ******* again.

all public servants should use public services

then we will see how things start to improve all of a sudden

they can get rid of their gates and high walls and guns/security first.

May as well just give them directly to gangs and criminals then
How many of the weapons "surrendered" are -- AK 47's / Fully automatic / never been licensed / the type of weapon used by PERPS ?
How many of the weapons "surrendered" have ever been used in the commission of a crime ?

ALL that this is doing is taking privately owned weapons NEVER used in a crime out of the pool of firearms owned by private citizens that are NOT -- hunters / competition shooters / collectors / firearms enthusiasts -- that no longer want all the legal hassle of owning a firearm !
.
WELL DONE !

One wonders if Adele Kirsten and GFSA are --

Misguided goody two shoes ?
Unwitting -- useful idiots ?
Completely clueless ?

Are working according to an AGENDA ?

Quite CLEARLY their 2 + 2 = 5 !
It's actually quite clear. They do have an agenda, and it's not a good thing. I remember cases where women fought off attackers, rapists, and GFSA went on to say their use of their husbands' firearms are illegal and they should be locked away. Let's get one thing clear:

GFSA and Adele Kirsten want to see all citizens disarmed. They do not give a rat's ass about the wellbeing of the citizens, they don't care that guns are that last bit of defense that so many have and they don't even respond to legal, good cases of self-defense. They're a cancer that's eating at everything good, trying to destroy and maim the industry as badly as they can.

Some stats around weapons used in crime, and how many of those are with weapons stolen from the public:

I don't particularly care for the industry.
I however very much care about my right to legally/legitimately own and use whatever firearm as a means to legally/rightfully protect myself (and others) against violent criminals.

If you truly care about your right to legally/legitimately own and use whatever firearm as a means to legally/rightfully protect yourself (and others) against violent criminals, then i strongly suggest you join and support GOSA.

From the link in the OP: (homicides per 100 000 people, note that SA is actually 8th worst and not all countries have a value)
Austalia 1
SA 34
World Average 5
Sub Saharan Africa 9

Clearly SA is more of a war zone than a country, so why should we have the same laws as a first world country?
Crime against the individual is only a small amount of that, most of the murder is business-related.

You don't need a gun to defend yourself. No one will be 'defenseless' against an unorganized mob. If you fear this do yourself a favor and sign up for a Krav Maga class, you would be surprised just how not defenseless a person can be.

So I have a firearm my late father owned. He however let the licence lapse while he was still alive. The gun is stored safely. I want to now licence and take legal possession of the gun. Is this amnesty for me?

I've done force-on-force training and could defend myself against 1, maybe 2 unarmed opponents long enough to get away.

As i am with my kids 90% of the time (when not at work safe behind security and several walls/fences) I would have no chance to protect myself and 2 small individuals against multiple criminals.
A firearm is an equalizer which would allow me to have a fighting (not guaranteed) chance so i respectfully disagree with your above statement.

Police minister Cele: The only people who should carry firearms are the police and the military

“The only people who should carry firearms are the police and the military. This is the ideal situation we are working in, but South Africans are currently living in fear because of the high violent crime rate in the country.
”So says Bheki Cele, the police minister.
At a conference in Centurion on Thursday, Cele said that the South African police would pursue this idea, therefore, that gun amnesty would kick off on December 1 this year and be sustained for six months.
According to Cele, weapons are the real enemy of the South African community. “Firearms are the most widely used tool when committing crimes, and especially violent crimes, and is the reason why South Africa’s crime and murder rates are so high.”
According to Cele, the six-month amnesty period aims to reduce the number of illegal weapons in private possession.

Since the beginning of October, 2,000 firearms have been taken out of “the wrong hands”, with more than a thousand of these firearms taken off in Gauteng.
“Last month, police destroyed about 20,000 illegal firearms seized during police raids last year.”
Cele goes on to say that firearm owners who have not renewed their licenses, for whatever reason, should take the opportunity to hand in their weapons.
“People with licenses that have expired must submit their weapons in accordance with the Firearms Control Act of 2000. They must also submit their firearms in order to apply for a new license.”
Persons who wish to hand in their weapons or apply for a new license must personally hand in their weapons at any amnesty office. The persons must then apply for a new license within 14 days.
According to Adv. John Welch, chairman of the South African Rifle Owners’ Association (SAGC), is most firearms owners reluctant to hand over their weapons to the police as the police lose weapons.
Welch said there have been about 4,500 firearms and 9.5 million rounds of ammunition at police stations across the country in the last five years.
“This year only 500 weapons disappeared from police stations,” he says.
However, Cele replied that several measures would be put in place to combat this problem.
In his speech, he said that provision will be made for nine central storage facilities in each province.
The officers handling the firearms that were handed in also had to go through stricter selection processes and meet certain criteria.
Only officers who met these criteria were appointed to handle firearms submitted during the amnesty period.
Cele says each weapon will also be checked to ensure that the weapons were not used to commit any crimes in South Africa. The culprits will also be prosecuted, he says.
According to Cele, there are currently some 450 000 illegal weapons in South Africa because their owners’ licenses have expired.
