South Africans will not be allowed to own guns for self defence under a newly-revived legislative proposal.

The Civilian Secretariat for Police Service (CSP) on Friday published a call for public comment on a 2021 draft of the Firearms Control Amendment Bill in the Government Gazette. Despite a promise in that notice, it did not publish the actual contents of the draft law on its badly outdated website – but revealed in a summary that it contains an effort to restrict gun ownership that is likely to be controversial.

The draft law seeks to "provide for the applicant for a firearm [licence] to provide a valid reason for possessing a firearm", said the CSP in its description of the Bill.

It then provides "that no firearm licenses may be issued for self-defence purposes".

  • South Africans will not be able to apply for a gun licence on the basis that they need a firearm for self-defence, under a legislative proposal formally revived on Friday.
  • The Civilian Secretariat for Police Service on Friday opened public comment on a 2021 version of the long-dormant draft Firearms Control Amendment Bill.
  • The secretariat says the planned legislation will demand a valid reason when applying for a firearm licence – and self defence doesn't count.
  • Gun owners, and prospective gun owners, have 44 days left to comment on the proposal

Can someone enlighten me on a valid reason to own a gun then? Let's put hunting aside for a second (rifle)...
Who would apply for a gun and why?
I don't own a gun.

A single mother with children need to be able to protect herself and her children from unwanted intruders.

A farmer need to be able to protect himself and his family from intruders.

A wheelchair-bound person need to be able to protect him/herself from intruders.

All that will be accomplished with this law is that people will not be able to protect themselves and their loved ones.

Ask yourself - is this something the criminal element is pushing?

I'm no gun person but if government had crime crime under control, then there wouldn't be a reason to own a gun other than hunting and sport. I guess people should start gathering crime stats for their areas when applying for gun licences.

Me, because I like shooting cardboard. It's enjoyable, I can do it when my time permits and it assists me in being proficient if one day I have to shoot someone who wants to kill me.

I also like not being a defenseless target on the street because walking in my town can get you stabbed for a cellphone.
There was a car accident in my street where the one person was getting violent, police got there in 2 hours time.

1. How about the country is as violent as f**k
2. Most criminals have stolen guns which they probably will use to kill you and your family
3. Bheki Cele is incompetent and should not hold his position as minister of Police
4. Bheki Cele is spineless to tackle real crime and should not hold his position as minister of Police
5. Bheki Cele is weak and should not hold his position as minister of Police
6. Bheki Cele is to cowardly to tackle real crime and should not hold his position as minister of Police
7. The cANCer is to inept to run this country so crime will only get worse because of points 3,4,5 and 6
8. Gun Free South Africa have been pushing this agenda and they can go **** themselves
9. There is more to this agenda, this vile government want an unarmed general public.
10. GFSA can go **** themselves

There, 10 valid points

The sooner the cANCer implodes the better for this country

So we will become lambs to the slaughter.

The criminals will become even more emboldened and crime and murder rates will rise dramatically because the criminals know that no one is armed.... except them of course.

Typical socialist/communist mentality.

This will get taken to the courts and if they have any common sense will rule in gun owner's favour.

We have one of the highest murder rates in the world but government wants to disarm the law abiding public....?!!!!! clearly they don't care one bit about us.

People, join Gun Owners of South Africa today to help us out, the basic membership is only R100 per year. We need to fight this.

You wake up at 2AM and see this standing in your house. One of them has a knife the other a firearm. Wife and 2 kids in the other room sleeping. You are not going to ask questions or try to negotiate you are going to send them straight to hell. Without a gun it's game over.
I've been in this situation, and you wouldn't have time to go get a weapon.
