So I want to do a self installation for my ADSL (that's if they let me of course  ). But I'd just like to make sure what it exactly entails.

From what I understand it's just installing any microfilters you might need and setting up your router and network connections.
Where it gets a bit hazy is the line itself. Do they upgrade your physical line? Or is it a simple mouse click at the Hellkom Towers that does it?

As I understand it, they have to hook-up your line at the exchange.

But for a self-install, all you have to do is to hook-up the router/modem and network config, and then see to any microfilters, as you said. ;)

Self install is when you pay R404 to do it yourself, then you get to spend another 2 months fighting to get the R404 retracted...

I did the self-install. You basically have to connect and configure (plug into line and enter username/password combo) your ADSL modem/router yourself, and buy the filters for the line @R28 each where you will be using POTS equipment on. Anyone who can read should be able to do this.

Be warned though, you have to make dead sure that Telkom has this information regarding the self-installation on their system from the beginning when you ordered the line.

I was still charged the installation fee even after I confirmed several times that this will not be the case. When I later logged a dispute, I was given a credit for that amount.
