Top management of Neotel must shake their head in wonder (wonder if they shouldn't pack up their toys and go home.)

And it is urgent: not only is the dearth of international bandwidth holding back the development of industries such as the call-centre industry, but there’s also the 2010 Soccer World Cup to contend with, not to mention the prospect that SA may win the tender for the bandwidth-hungry international telescope, SKA (square kilometre array).
-
But there have been strange politics around Eassy. And communications department director general Lyndall Shope-Mafole now says that it’s bad news for developing countries and that the government will not allow it to land in SA.
-
“Those who want to partner with us can partner on our terms,”
-
Meanwhile, Public Enterprises Minister Alec Erwin’s new baby, Broadband Infraco, has grandiose plans to build two state-owned undersea cables linking SA to the world, one landing in London, the other in Brazil. Erwin claims Infraco can do it cheaper.
Excuse me while I go vomit.

When will we learn that you can never teach monkeys to count? After all, this country has a government that it deserves! The majority voted for them, so the majority will have to take the bitter (which is plentiful) with the sweet (of which there is not much). I am following kilo39 to go and vomit.

I do not know if any of you are aware of the rumors of how they keep their majority vote. There have been various incidents for intimidations and exploitation of local lore to get the people to vote to the desired party. Now as I say these are only rumors, but the fact that the rumors are there means that somewhere there is a bit of truth behind it.

“Those who want to partner with us can partner on our terms,”

Why in earth did they say this? As everyone says, this is a complete contradiction of what they wanted month or so ago when they urged the private sector to make a move.

Do you just love the local guavamint?

say it like it is. Government ministers prefer to spend taxpayers money. It increases the power of their thiefdom. The more money and the more complex the project is, the more money they can siphon off to their own pockets, legally or illegally.

The problem is that if there is competition for your project, they will show just how corrupt an inefficient you really are.

Why is it bad news for developing countries? Probably because they may evolve and not be only developing countries any more, which means that corruption will be frowned upon.

If the undersea cables are laid by private enterprises it will rob the goverment of an opportunity to take underhanded deals. That is so wrong! These people have a job to do!

It is exactly the same situation that we have with new neighbourhoods being developed. Yes they are all security estates, but all the infrastructure like laying out roads, electricty and even telecom cables are done by the developer. This used to be done by the city council and are now being done and paid for by the investors. But the government who are incapable of doing it themselves are always trying to put obstacles in the way to try and stop them. Why? Can you imagine what the housing situation would have looked like if we waited on the goverment to do these developments?

I began this post for another thread: unfinished. Excuse me if I drop it in here (sorry for the crosspost.)

When will we learn that you can never teach monkeys to count? After all, this country has a government that it deserves! The majority voted for them, so the majority will have to take the bitter (which is plentiful) with the sweet (of which there is not much). I am following kilo39 to go and vomit.
Not so sure I agree with the sentiments entirely. I agree the country has the government it deserves and I agree the majority voted for them: however we have to ask how this government came about; it consists of people exiled to other countries and other people who 'were not granted the privileges of the previous government.' (What is the average age of the government?) However (having said that) this government seems anathema to the people (though they vote for them.) Unfortunately also much a product of our previous regime (and the kids seem to have little sense of history.)

For people 'on the other side' it is very easy to buy into the propaganda (it is endlessly extolled by our Prez and sabc; any party body, media.) (And in truth: besides us here and the few informed who else has any clue: or even how direct is their need, do they even know they have a need?) It is also easy for us to sit in our cyberworlds but 'out there' millions of south africans (black africans? people) are living their lives as best they are able; interacting with each other, getting on.

(as far as I got)

We have a philosophical conundrum: this government is not the government for the people (no matter the propaganda) and while they may have done good there is much ill and NOTHING of their policies, speeches or acts are acceptable to a "western, capitalistic, LIBERAL" point of view. Yes even socialist. This government pretends to build while it destroys (and they grow richer and continue to keep 'the people' in the dark through their propaganda.)

Then we get the MORONS that tell people to leave.

Yes I can leave and I sometimes wonder if I should not leave you lot to it: you deserve it?! (All those years of apartheid.) But then again I think of the children and the millions of 'everyday' south africans (if I could give all the whiteys a passport I would.) But the curse is upon us all. And THIS is not the government or policy or attitude or >actions< that WE want.

And we are f#kked considering the myopia on this thread.

How is not landing cables not anti-competitive, anti-capitalist (even anti-social/socialist.) How is the tacit support and approval of bob not 'anti-democratic, (perhaps even full communist?)

I am not a lover of capitalists but this government is neither: seeming to exist for their own power, enrichment and fu#ked up ideology.

Sickening.

Again, only two things can explain government's behavior on these issues:

1. Low IQ
2. Corruption

Ivy can pick one on behalf of the DoC and the President.

Crazy! What the heck are they doing? It makes no sense. Maybe they fear that they will lose a grip on power in the masses are able to get cheap internet.

In Canada many homes are gearing up for between 10 and 25bmps download speeds. Not to mention that the rates are coming down all the time now.

SA is really being left behind.
