Hoping to get some feedback, this is part business startup idea, part general research.
I have on a number of occasions read that when selling products through various mediums, either direct or online through some ecommerce site, it helps to create a brand identity that is specifically related or associated to the lifestyle/activity choice.
What I mean by that, is that say I start selling bicycles and associated parts and accessories, it helps potential and repeat customers to see a brand that is specifically associated with selling these products and not other products, like laptops, for instance. The idea being to associate the brand with bicycles and associated equipment, so that through the brand you can connect to the community that uses and are interested in bicycles and associated equipment.
If you sell laptops through the same brand, it is going to be very difficult to achieve some sort of respectability and confidence in your business/brand and the products that you are trying to sell.
Am I missing the point or can someone with experience provide some advice?
